Learn how to make a natural mint shamrock shake for the kids this year. I’ve always been fascinated with St. Patrick’s Day from the legend to the food. When the kids were little, we used to sprinkle gold glitter from the door of their bedroom to the front door while they were asleep. When they woke up, they were convinced that a leprechaun had visited them during the night.

How to Make a Natural Mint Shamrock Shake
Now that they’re older, we don’t have that many opportunities to fun things like that any longer. Most of the St. Patrick’s Day treats that I see advertised are green – and they aren’t green from kale or spinach but by the artificial food coloring. Since I don’t artificial food coloring, I decided to get creative this year.
The kids love milkshakes and they’d be quite happy with a shamrock shake from the local fast food place, but I prefer something a bit healthier. There’s a bit of flexibility when making this natural mint shamrock shake. The key is no food coloring and to add several fresh peppermint leaves. That way it is a fresh mint milkshake rather than one that uses artificial flavoring.
What type of milk should I use in a mint milkshake?
I use regular whole milk in my mint milkshake. But, there is no reason that it couldn’t be made with low-fat milk. Or, you can try non-dairy milk like almond milk, soy milk, or even coconut milk.
Once you’ve chosen the type of milk to youse, you just need to choose your ice cream. I would have made my ice cream if I had time, but it’s been a hectic day, so I went with organic from the co-op.
When I have time, I use a no salt ice cream maker to make homemade ice cream.
You can use your own favorite brand. I chose vanilla with chocolate chips to give it some texture. You could easily go with soy ice cream and soy milk to keep it vegan.

This looks really good! 🙂
Thanks, Julie. We enjoyed it!
I love milkshakes! That looks and sounds amazing! I will definitely have to try this out!
Thanks, Shannon!
I don’t believe I’ve ever tried fresh peppermint. I’m not a fan of cold things (sensitive teeth for one) so I’d opt for yogurt. The kids probably wouldn’t love that as much as ice cream though.
Yogurt would work too, Deb. Maybe add a bit of banana with it to thicken it up. I really prefer fresh herbs whenever I can use them. Such a difference in taste!
