An entirely homemade Christmas? Almost 60% of Americans say they plan to give homemade gifts this holiday season, such as baked goods or crafts. And, you can include me in one of the 60% that will be creating gifts this year.

Christmas Chalkboard

Have you ever wondered if it was possible to have an entirely homemade Christmas? Would you be satisfied if you received only homemade gifts? Would your children?

I love homemade gifts and I happily receive them for just about any holiday there is. It doesn’t matter to me if the candle I get is homemade or from the bath shop at the mall. I’d be thrilled with a homemade quilt and my husband would be in heaven with a plate of homemade fudge.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy shopping just as much as the next person, but I’m trying to remember that shopping is not a sport and I no longer turn to shopping as a sort of retail therapy.

Meaningful gift-giving

One of my goals this year is to be more meaningful in my gift-giving. I’m trying to create more gifts and to remember that presents that give the gift of your time are the most special ones of all. Now that the kids are older, I don’t get to spend as much time with them.

I remember when I would have been giddy with excitement over the thought of a few days without the kids, but all it does right now is make me miss them. I would much rather have a lunch out and a few hours of their time this Christmas than a gift they bought at the mall.

DIY Christmas ornaments as gifts

There are so many ways to make your own Christmas ornaments that having an entirely homemade Christmas just might be possible if you gift these. Here are just a few to start with.

  • This cloche ornament is shatterproof so it’s a great choice for families with kids.

Homemade wrapping paper

Of course, once you have the presents, you need to wrap them somehow. You can use a gift bag you create, try out Japanese furoshiki, or make your own wrapping paper.

Homemade Christmas chalkboard

In an effort to remind myself of that this year, I created a “Create It” chalkboard. It’s a reminder to not only create gifts but to create time and memories.

Since the message is written in chalk, you can really write anything you want on it. This is the message that works for me. But, it also works great for a Christmas Countdown chalkboard.

Supplies:

You will need the following supplies to make the Christmas chalkboard that I made. If you don’t have the exact decorations on hand, then you can definitely use whatever you have in your craft box. I painted mine white. But, you could also paint it red, green, gold or give it a clear varnish. It’s all up to you.

  • Chalkboard, unfinished
  • White acrylic paint & paintbrush sponge
  • Painters’ tape
  • Decorations for the side: ornament, artificial greenery, wooden cutouts, etc.

  1. I love and agree with your sentiment about homemade gifts. I also like that part of this gift would be what you choose to write before you wrap it! Thanks for the tutorial.

  2. What a great idea! I love that this gift is homemade and can be tweaked to be used for a bunch of different occasions. I am a sucker for chalkboards and now I want to make this.

  3. So I don’t know how I ended up with a box of chalk and no chalkboard! Going through some drawers, I found some pretty pastel-colored chalk and guess I was going to purchase a board at some point, lol. This is a great motivator. My chalk was only a buck so can splurge on the board I guess!

  4. Oh that is so cute! I love the idea of being able to write whatever message I want for the day. You could even use it as a countdown!

  5. Love how it turned out! I have a small chalkboard like this in my craft room for inspirational words and quotes. When my youngest son was born we switched to an all homemade tree. Every year my kids make the paper chain and we create a new set of ornaments to add to the tree. I meant to keep it up so the kids wouldn’t destroy heirloom ornaments, but we have kept the tradition beacuase it is so much fun!
