I really wanted a Christmas wreath to hang on our inside front door. You may remember I made a grapevine wreath earlier this year. I wanted something more festive for the holidays.
How to Make a Wreath without a Wreath Form
So, I thought about buying a wreath locally made from pine boughs but I really didn’t want to invest all that money in something that I was going to have to throw in the garbage. I decided that I would make a wreath myself.
When I went shopping for supplies, I noticed that wreath forms were fairly expensive. The frugal girl inside of me decided I needed to figure out how to make a wreath without a wreath form. So, my first question was “What can I use as a base for a wreath.”
Since I needed to figure out DIY wreath rings that might work, I started to look through what I already had on hand. I didn’t want to take apart my grapevine wreath and turn it into a Christmas wreath.
I briefly thought about using a clothes hanger bent into a circle but since our clothes hangers are plastic, I didn’t have a metal clothes hanger handy.
But, I remembered that I had several embroidery hoops in my craft box and I decided that would work well. Here’s another fun Christmas craft project using an embroidery hoop from Olive Jude. I can’t wait to try it this year.
How do I make a door wreath?
This wreath without a form would work fine on your door provided it’s protected by a storm or it’s inside like in an apartment. You don’t want to expose the wreath to the wind, snow, and rain or it will be destroyed.
If you need something outside, I would recommend something natural like a natural Christmas wreath. They are really quite easy to make and they’ll stand up to snow and rain.
These directions to make a wreath without a wreath form are fairly simple. if you have something else at home that is about the same size and dimensions as the embroidery hoop, you can try using that as well.
You will need to experiment with the directions until it works for what you have on hand.
Wrap the embroidery hoop in lace or fabric until it is mostly covered. Try to get a coordinating or matching color to go with the tulle or your color theme.
Continue until you cover the entire embroidery hoop in the fabric.
Cut strips of tulle about one inch wide and about six inches in length. That is the size that worked for my five-inch diameter embroidery hoop. If yours is a different diameter, you’ll have to experiment.
Starting at the top of the wreath, tie sets of three strips around the wreath until it is covered.
Adjust the strips so that the tulle is facing forward and covering the hoop. Cut off anything that is out of balance and fluff it carefully.
Using the hot glue gun, attach whatever decorations you have to make it festive. I used gold spray painted pine cones and a small plastic set of holly leaves with berries.
Carefully attach a ribbon to hang.
My thoughts
I think this wreath without a wreath form came out pretty well for a first experiment. If I make this again, I will probably add more tulle and maybe a few more decorations to cover up the bare spots on the wreath.

Beautiful! My kiddos made a wreath out of their hand prints for family for Christmas. We used a paper plate to help form the right shape. I realize that probably wouldn’t work for this project.

I’ve taken an old wire hanger and stretched it out to a circle then I cut and tied pieces of light and dark green garbage bags (and even those that our local newspaper comes in) and tied them around the hanger like you did here. It was a fun and inexpensive wreath that people asked me how I made!
