Homemade Sanitizer Spray With Argan Oil

Last Updated on April 9, 2022 by Ellen Christian

One of the problems with using a homemade sanitizer spray is that it can be very drying. If you’re hoping to use the spray to disinfect your hands, it probably has alcohol in it. And, while alcohol is wonderful at killing germs, it dries out your skin.

So, this homemade sanitizer spray also contains argan oil to help kill germs. The best choice is always to wash your hands with warm, soapy water. But, if you aren’t at home, having a sanitizer spray may help kill germs as well.

How do you make a natural sanitizer spray?

All of the ingredients in this homemade sanitizer spray are natural. Isopropyl alcohol is an organic compound. Vinegar, argan oil, and essential oils are all-natural as well.

Is vinegar a disinfectant?

Yes, vinegar will kill some bacteria and germs. However, it is not a registered disinfectant. So, if you are concerned about killing viruses and germs specifically, it is better to use isopropyl alcohol or even hydrogen peroxide. So, if you’re wondering if you can use vinegar alone to disinfect your hands during flu season, chances are that it will not work.

Is hydrogen peroxide a sanitizer?

Yes, if you need a homemade sanitizer spray, hydrogen peroxide is improved as a disinfectant by the CDC. I have never tried it in a sanitizing spray, but they do recommend it to disinfect surfaces. However, they still recommend isopropyl alcohol as the approved germ killer.

Face it, isopropyl alcohol doesn’t smell that good. While it might be effective at killing germs, I do not like the way it smells. So, while most essential oils probably do not help kill germs, adding them to a homemade sanitizer spray can help it smell better.

Some essential oils do have disinfecting properties like peppermint, lemon, tea tree, geranium, clary sage, and lime. So, this spray uses lemon and clary sage. If you don’t have or don’t like lemon and clary sage, you can use another scent.

What does argan oil do?

Adding argan oil to the homemade sanitizer spray will help counter the drying properties of the isopropyl alcohol. Argan oi is very moisturizing. So, it should help keep your hands from drying out. If you don’t have argan oil, you can try using olive oil or jojoba oil instead.

How do you make homemade sanitizing spray?

There are lots of ways that you can make a sanitizing spray. This is just one method. It’s very important that you use 99% isopropyl alcohol in your recipe. This is the ingredient that will kill viruses according to the CDC.  If you cannot find it at your local drug store, you may have luck on Amazon depending on the day. The last time I checked, it was back ordered but shipping in about 3 weeks. Get your order in now.
