We try to enjoy Irish foods for St Patrick’s Day for the holiday when we can. St Patrick’s Day is also called the Feast of Saint Patrick and is celebrated on 17 March, the anniversary of his death.
Irish Oatcakes Recipe
St. Patrick is the Patron Saint of Ireland and is known for bringing Christianity to Ireland. Many people celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by eating traditional Irish food or foods tinted green since green is the color of St. Patrick’s Day.
I know the first thing I think of when I think of food for St Patrick’s Day is corned beef and cabbage. While corned beef and cabbage is one of my favorite Irish foods, I know that there are a lot of other foods for St Patrick’s Day as well.
In the past, I have made a traditional Irish Soda Bread recipe. This year, I wanted to try something different for St Patrick’s Day. I decided that I would make Irish Oatcakes which are a traditional Irish food.
What are Irish oatcakes?
So, when I hear the word cake, I think of a dessert which isn’t what these are really. They are basically Irish oat crackers. They are flat and rather crispy versus moist and sweet.
If you want a sweet oatcakes recipe, you can top these with honey or add a bit more sugar.
What do you eat with oatcakes?
- Cheese
- Peanut butter
- Soup
- Scrambled eggs
- Smoked salmon
- Cream cheese
Breakfast oatcakes recipe
You can enjoy Irish Oatcakes for breakfast along with eggs or as a snack any time of the day. You can serve the oatcakes warm with butter or jelly.
Traditionally, oatcakes would be served with cheese which is how my husband likes them. I prefer mine with jelly but I have also heard people enjoy them with honey.
Irish Oatcakes are similar to Bannocks from Scotland. Have you tried either of these? What are your favorite foods for St Patrick’s Day?

Is 1.25 cup water correct? I used only about 1/4 and it looked like too much, so I added more flour. I think 1.25 cups would make it runny…or did I not do it right? Thanks.
Hi – The directions as I have written them are correct. If you try a variation please let me know.
Your Oatcakes look awesome! Happy St. Patrick’s Day and thanks so much for sharing with Full Plate Thursday!
Miz Helen
Thank you so much. Appreciate the visit!
I used to make something similar but forgot about them, great to remember. I’ll make them this weekend.
Very yummy!!!
Just wanted to let you know this recipe was featured on this weeks friday food frenzy hop http://www.stayingclosetohome.com/2013/03/recipe-linky-friday-food-frenzy-week-15.html
Great recipe, Ellen!
I love just about anything oatmeal! This looks like a really yummy recipe. Thanks for sharing, I might have to give it a go 🙂
Well if I wasn’t already hungry this morning. I really want to try these!
This looks delicious = I think I will make it for my girlfriend’s St, Patrick’s day party
I will have to try these soon! I am not a big fan of Irish Soda bread, so these will be a good substitute
this looks pretty EZ and I know my lil cooks would love it–put jelly on anything and they gobble it up! =)
I can’t wait to try this. They look so yummy and easy. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
i love such easy and simple recipes. will try these soon.
I was hoping that I’d find this recipe here after you mentioned it on my blog! It looks fairly easy to make, too. I think I’ll give it a try this weekend.
Those look good. Are they like scones but heavier?
Sort of. They are much more dense but the taste is similar but not sweet at all.
I think you are missing a step? Are you supposed to add the oatmeal in with the flour and salt? These look tasty!
A nice change of pace for breakfast! I am loving this linky too!
Ellen, this sounds so simple and so good! I’m going to make these soon 🙂
I’m a big fan of simple recipes. I’ll definitely be trying this one!
Oh yay, another very authentic Irish recipe. Such a collective mix of recipes in this thread today =)
I was wondering if it was sweet also. I bet it would be delicious with our homemade blackberry jelly.
That looks good! I don’t have any ideas for celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with the kids. Does it taste mainly like bread? I wouldn’t think sweet on it’s own.
Sort of like bread or a very moist/flat biscuit 🙂 It’s not sweet on its own but is amazing with jelly!
this looks so simple to make! What a great breakfast idea!
