Heart Healthy Lifestyle Habits
As I get older, I start realizing that I need to make a few more lifestyle changes to help me stay healthy as I age. After my mom’s health setback last year, I’ve really started paying a lot more attention to my daily habits.
My Mom hadn’t been prioritizing her health and we almost lost her. She’d been unintentionally ignoring a problem that we didn’t know she had rather than taking care of it. And, this was a huge wake-up call for me.
So, I wanted to talk today about heart healthy lifestyle tips that are important to remember, especially since women suffer from heart disease at essentially the same rate as men. I often forget about the little things that I can do every day to help prevent health issues like heart disease.
By living a healthy lifestyle, we can help keep my blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels where they should be. This can lower the risk for heart disease and heart attack.
Eat a healthy diet
Look for healthy fats, not trans fats. Fats are important. So, you don’t want to eliminate them from your diet completely.
But, you need to make sure they come from foods like avocado and fish rather than from baked goods and fried foods. One of my favorite ways to enjoy avocado is in my Avocado Egg Toast.
When shopping, make sure that you read the label on the foods you buy. Trans fats will be called partially hydrogenated oils.
Get a good night’s sleep
It’s important that you try to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night. I know it’s not easy sometimes. But, this should be your goal. Some studies show that adults over 45 that get less than 6 hours of sleep at night are more likely to have a stroke or heart attack than those who get 6 to 8 hours.
This is one of the heart healthy lifestyle habits that I really struggle with. I always feel like I need to squeeze in just one more hour to get more done.
But, I do notice that I feel much better after a good night’s sleep so I’m working on this.
I have a mostly sedentary job so I know this is an area I need to be aware of. I wear a smart watch to help me keep track of how much I’m moving each day.
Staying seated for too long is bad for your health. So, try to move regularly. And, try to move throughout the day whether that’s at home or at work.
I’ve been adding more movement into my day by working on upper body strength with my Kettlebell each day in addition to riding my exercise bike. These are easy ways for me to add movement to my day.
Be aware of your medical issues
It’s important that you speak to your doctor about your health so that you’re aware of your medical conditions. If you do have a condition like high blood pressure, they can tell you what steps you need to take to lower your risk.
You can talk to them about the heart healthy lifestyle habits that he thinks you should implement. Your doctor will know your medical history and can make recommendations that are safe for you.
