Praline Yams with Sugary Sam Sweet Potatoes for Thanksgiving

You will love these Praline Yams with Sugary Sam Sweet Potatoes! I love getting fresh veggies from the garden but that only works for me for a few months a year. For the rest of the year, I need to rely on what I can get from the grocery store.

I’d love to be able to walk out to my garden twelve months a year and pick fresh vegetables to feed the family but that just isn’t realistic for me in rural Vermont. Winters are long and there’s nothing that grows in three feet of snow.

shopping for groceries

While I like fresh vegetables, there are times when my grocery budget or my limited dinner preparation time doesn’t allow me to start from fresh. When that’s the case, I turn to frozen or canned vegetables to feed my family quickly while still providing a healthy dinner. Plus, when you are rushed for time, it is faster to use canned vegetables than fresh.

Allens is the leader in canned and frozen vegetables, producing brands including Popeye’s Spinach, Freshlike, Veg-All and of course their Allens brand. I recently had the chance to try several of the Allens brands veggies and was very impressed with them.

Not all canned veggies taste good. I’ve tried a few where the veggies were more bits than actual whole pieces of vegetable but the Allens brand isn’t like that.  I had a chance to try the Veg-All, canned carrots and Popeye spinach and was pleased with each of the vegetables I tried.

My garden isn’t quite up and running yet & I’ve never had any luck growing sweet potatoes or yams. I recently had the opportunity to try Sugary Sam Sweet Potatoes distributed by Allen’s Inc.

I found the recipe on their can and decided to try making Praline Yams.

Sweet potatoes or yams?

So, before we get to the recipe, what’s the difference between Yams and Sweet Potatoes? Most people think they are the same thing or just different varieties of the same thing, but they aren’t. Sweet Potatoes and Yams are two entirely different vegetables.

Yams are starchier and drier than sweet potatoes. And, sweet potatoes are sweeter. Chances are unless you are shopping in an ethnic market, you are buying sweet potatoes. The USDA even requires companies to label our cans of yams as sweet potatoes to avoid confusion.

Sugary Sam Mashed Sweet Potatoes

If you love Sugary Sam mashed sweet potatoes, you can buy them already made! Or, you can use the canned sweet potatoes to make your own. Just heat them up in a pan on the stove.

Then, add a tablespoon of butter. Finally, use your hand mixer or a potato masher to mash them until they are smooth. Get your Sugary Sams Sweet Potatoes here.

If you want to try a Sugary Sams Yam Pie, just use pureed sweet potatoes in place of the pureed pumpkin in your favorite pumpkin pie recipe.

If you’d like to make Sugary Sams Sweet Potato Casserole with Pecans, you can simply add chopped pecans to the top of this recipe before you bake it. It does give it a nice, added crunch!

What should I serve this with?

This recipe is the perfect side dish for ham, pork, lamb or prime rib. We often have it for Thanksgiving, but it’s delicious with any meal. Once you’ve tried it, you’ll make it over and over again! If you’re planning to prepare prime rib roast, check out this article.

This recipe is delicious! The sweet potatoes from Sugary Sam were in big chunks, not tiny pieces, which was a pleasant surprise.  Some canned veggies aren’t that great quality and I was pleased to see that Sugary Sam Sweet Potatoes was a canned vegetable I could trust for quality.

I hope you’ll try these Praline Yams with Sugary Sam Sweet Potatoes. It’s definitely one of my favorite canned sweet potato recipes. If you enjoy Southern candied yams, simply add some cinnamon, nutmeg sugar and butter to a pot along with the sweet potatoes and heat until it is caramelized. Yum!
