DY Succulent Centerpieces

While many people purchase a holiday centerpiece for their dining table, creating your own is very easy. You can customize it to match your decor or the holidays.

All you need is potting soil, pots or baskets, small pebbles or rocks, and succulents. Or, if you want an arrangement that will last forever, make a faux succulent centerpiece instead.

What are succulents?

Succulents are a type of plant that stores water in its leaves, stems, or roots. This enables them to survive in arid climates or periods of drought.

There are over 60 families of succulents, with many different shapes, sizes, and colors. So, you can easily make an arrangement for any decor.

What type of potting soil or potting mix is best?

The best potting mix for succulents is a well-draining one. Succulents don’t like to sit in wet soil, which can cause them to rot.

One way to create a well-draining potting mix is to add sand, perlite, or pumice to regular potting soil.

You can also purchase a commercial succulent potting mix from your local garden center.

How do you water succulents?

Succulents should be watered deeply only when the soil is completely dry. Water your succulents in the morning, so they have time to dry out before nightfall.

To water your succulents, use a watering can with a long spout or a hose with a watering wand attachment. Water the soil around the plant, careful not to get water on the leaves.

Place your plant on a saucer so the water can drain. Or, line your basket with a plastic container.

Allow the excess water to drain away, then empty any collected water in the saucer beneath the pot.

How much light do most succulents need?

Succulents need at least six hours of indirect sunlight daily to maintain their compact growth habit and vibrant colors.

If your succulents lack light, they will stretch and become leggy. This is called etiolation.

So, to prevent etiolation, give your succulent arrangement a bright spot in the dining room.

If you have a low light area you want a focal point for, create a centerpiece using faux succulents in your arrangement instead. They are just as pretty.

What type of container should I use?

This trendy farmhouse rope basket was created using nautical rope and poster board. It’s lightweight and ideal for faux succulent arrangements.

To create succulent centerpieces using real plants and soil, you will need a plastic planter or container that will stand up to moisture when you water the plants.

Instead of stones, you can add faux peat moss to make it look more realistic. You can use many different types of baskets to change this centerpiece.

Repurposing a centerpiece for different holidays

There’s no need to get a new centerpiece for every holiday. You can use the same container and vary the decorations.

Add different colors of ribbon and an elegant bow to the center of the container. Place the basket on a pedestal with a piece of velvet for an extra pop of color.

You can begin with a metal farmhouse tub as the container for large faux succulent arrangements.

Where can I buy faux succulents?

You can find faux succulents at most craft stores, home improvement stores, and online retailers. Look for them in the artificial plants section.

When choosing faux plants, look for realistic-looking ones and made of high-quality materials. Avoid plastic plants that look cheap and fake. Some stores that sell faux succulents are Michael’s, Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, Hobby Lobby, and Amazon.

Can I use real succulents in my arrangement?

Yes, you can use real succulents in your arrangement if you prefer. Keep in mind that real plants will need more care than faux ones.

To use natural plants, choose a container with drainage holes and use potting mix made for succulents. Be sure to water the plants regularly and give them plenty of light.

Finally, some real succulents that work well in arrangements are Sedum rubrotinctum ‘Aurora’, Echeveria elegant,or  Kalanchoe thyrisflora.
