How to Tell You’re in Ketosis Without Strips
Many people that follow the ketogenic diet test their blood ketones or urine with strips to find out if they are in ketosis. Not everyone wants to buy keto strips regularly to determine their keto levels.
I’ve been carb cycling for almost a year to lose weight. That means is that I cycle from very low carb (keto) to high carb to help my metabolism stay flexible.
My body is generally in ketosis except for my high-carb days. I’ve dropped about 40 pounds using this method.
I wanted an easy way to tell daily whether or not I was in ketosis. I didn’t want to use strips. And I don’t use a glucose meter because I am not diabetic. So I don’t want to test my blood ketone levels using a blood ketone meter. I also have a fear of needles.
If you’re new to following a ketogenic diet, let me start with some basics. The keto diet is about carb intake and maintaining ketosis to lower your body weight.
You’ll want to get a KEYTO to get started quickly.
What is ketosis?
Ketosis is a state in which your body burns fat for energy instead of glucose. When you eat a lot of carbs, your body turns those carbs into glucose and uses that for energy.
When you restrict carbs, your body looks for another energy source, turning to fat. Fat is broken down into ketones, which are used for energy.
The keto diet is sometimes called the “fat-burning” diet. Simply put, your body will burn carbs first, so an increased carbohydrate intake means your body continuously burns those carbs and never gets to burning fat.
Stored glucose becomes fat if you do not burn it. That means weight gain.
People that follow ketogenic diets eat low-carb diets. The lower carb intake means their body will start to burn fat stores once the carbs have been used up.
What are ketones?
Ketones are waste products produced when your body breaks down fat for energy. These ketones build up in your blood and urine.
You can test for ketones using strips that change color to indicate the level of ketones in your urine or blood. Or, you can use KEYTO, a breath sensor for ketosis and weight loss. Find out more.
Is keto a low-carb diet?
The keto diet is very low-carb, but it’s not zero-carb. The typical ketogenic diet allows 20-50 grams of carbs per day.
Now that you know the basics of the keto diet let’s talk about how to tell if you’re in ketosis without strips.
Health benefits of a low-carb ketogenic diet
There are many health benefits of following a low-carb ketogenic diet. Some benefits include:
- Weight loss
- Reduced inflammation
- Improved mental clarity and less brain fog
- Increased energy levels
- Lower blood sugar levels
- Improved cholesterol levels
- Reduced body weight and body fat
If you’re interested in following a ketogenic diet for its health benefits, it’s essential to know if you’re in ketosis.
Is there a way to tell if you are in ketosis?
There are a few different ways to tell if you’re in ketosis without strips:
- Your breath: When you’re in ketosis, your body produces ketones. One of the ketones, acetone, is exhaled through your breath. This can give your breath a fruity smell. Check out KEYTO.
- Your urine: You can test your urine for ketones with strips.
- Your energy levels: When you’re in ketosis, you may have more energy.
- Your mental clarity: Some people report improved mental clarity when in ketosis.
- Your appetite: You may have a reduced appetite in ketosis.
How long does it take to get into ketosis?
It typically takes 2-4 days of eating a low-carb diet to get into ketosis. However, everyone is different; some people may get into ketosis faster or slower.
To find out if you’re in ketosis or not, I recommend the KEYTO Breath Sensor. It’s the easiest way to find out if you’re in ketosis without strips.
What foods increase ketones?
If you want to increase your ketone levels, there are a few things you can do:
Eat more fat: Fat is broken down into ketones and used for energy. So, eating more fat will help increase your ketone levels.
Restrict carbs: The fewer carbs you eat, the more your body will have to turn to fat for energy. This will help increase your ketone levels.
Exercise: Exercise helps increase your ketone levels by making your body use more fat for energy. This also helps when losing weight.
If you’re struggling with fasting, I really recommend that you try Lasta. It’s made all the difference for me.
How can I speed up ketosis weight loss?
If you want to speed up ketosis weight loss, there are a few things you can do:
Eat more fat: Increase your fat intake to 70-80% of your daily calories. This will help your body burn fat for energy.
Exercise: Exercise can help you lose weight and speed up ketosis.
Sleep: Sleep is essential for weight loss and overall health. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep every night.
Drink plenty of water: Drinking water will help you lose weight by keeping you hydrated.
Do I need to do intermittent fasting to enter ketosis?
No, you don’t need to do intermittent fasting to enter ketosis. Intermittent fasting can help you lose weight and speed up ketosis, but it’s unnecessary.
I do not fast and am successful using this method. I go about 10 hours between eating at night and breaking my fast with coffee in the morning. You can achieve ketosis this way.
You’ll need to test to see if you are in ketosis with the KEYTO Breath Sensor.
What is the keto flu?
The keto flu is a term used to describe the symptoms some people experience when starting a low-carb diet. Symptoms include fatigue, brain fog, and irritability. The keto flu typically lasts for a week or two.
To avoid the keto flu, ensure you get enough electrolytes (salt, magnesium, potassium) and drink plenty of water.
If you do experience the keto flu, it will likely go away on its own after a week or two. However, you may want to see a doctor if your symptoms are severe.
Tips for being successful with nutritional ketosis
Here are some tips to reach ketosis and limit carb consumption.
- Add healthy fats like fatty fish, coconut oil, and avocado.
- Increase your daily protein intake. It will help you stay full and avoid snacking.
- Stock up on keto-friendly foods like low-carb veggies and full-fat dairy.
- Improve your exercise performance.
- Limit salt intake to get rid of water weight.
- Be patient with yourself. It takes time to get used to cab restriction.
- Get the KEYTO Breath Sensor for Ketosis and Weight Loss.
What is KEYTO?
KEYTO is a breath sensor that tells you if you’re in ketosis and tracks your progress over time. The device itself is small and easy to use. You simply breathe into it for a few seconds, and it will give you a reading within seconds.
The KEYTO app also helps you track progress, set goals, and get expert tips.
How does the KEYTO Breath Sensor work?
The KEYTO breath sensor measures the amount of acetone in your breath. Acetone is a ketone body that is produced when your body breaks down fat for energy. The more acetone in your breath, the more fat you’re burning.
To use the KEYTO breath sensor, simply breathe into it for a few seconds. The device will then give you a reading within seconds.
Using KEYTO is very simple and takes very little time. It took me less than 5 minutes to get it set up and running with the app. You will enter some basic information and your weight loss goal.
Once that is done, you can start using KEYTO to track when you’re in ketosis. I love that it also connects with your step tracker. It’s so important to combine exercise with healthy eating.
If you’re new to ketosis, don’t worry. There are lots of helpful information on the app that explains everything. Get your own KEYTO here.

Thank you. That was a fantastic article. Years ago we called it Atkins and it worked every single day. Excellent reminder of what really works. Thanks again.
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Yes, it’s similar to the Atkins diet. I still enjoy their treats occasionally. Thank you for stopping by!
