If you’ve ever had a chest cold and felt like an elephant was sitting on your chest, you’re probably wondering if you can loosen mucus naturally so you can actually breathe again. I hate being sick, and I’m not a good patient. I don’t like staying in bed or resting and not being able to breathe is frustrating.

Loosen Mucus Naturally

Your nasal passages (from your nose to your windpipe) are protected by a thin watery mucus membrane. Inside this layer are cilia which are hair like structures that remove foreign particles and help keep your airways clean. Dust, smoke, dry air, and other irritants can prevent the cilia from doing their job properly. When this happens, the mucus lining becomes thicker and the cilia slow down making breathing more difficult. There are several different ways you can loosen mucus naturally and breathe again.

Moisturize the Air

If dry air is one of the causes of thicker mucus production, you may find relief by adding moisture to the air. This can be done simply with a humidifier. You may also find that taking a hot shower helps you breathe more freely.

Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is one of the best ways to thin mucus so you can cough it up. Drinking water is one of the easiest ways to stay hydrated. However, you may find relief from hot beverages like broth or herbal tea if you have a cold or a sore throat. My ginger tea is one of my favorites. Just make sure that the liquids are not milk based. Milk can cause mucus to become thicker.

Lemon, Ginger, and Garlic

Lemon, ginger, and garlic promote healthy respiratory function so eating foods with these ingredients may help you breathe more freely. I find that my ginger tea with lemon helps when I’m not feeling well. My husband swears by Mexican food with extra garlic when he’s not feeling well.

  1. I always eat raw garlic when I have a cold - I believe it definitely works! I haven't tried ginger though- will have to give it whirl during cold season!
