This asparagus bacon quiche with walking onions is one of my favorites. One of my favorite spring foods is asparagus. While we don’t grow any in the garden, I always look for fresh asparagus in the grocery store when it’s spring. This quiche recipe includes not only asparagus but also Egyptian Walking Onions from our garden.

Asparagus and Bacon Quiche Recipe
So, have you ever heard of Egyptian walking onions? You may also know them by the name top setting onions.
These little onions replant themselves year after year by forming a small onion bulb at the top of the green stalk. Then, the stalk tips over and the onion bulb walks to its new location and plants itself for next year.
Anything that replicates itself yearly is a good choice in my book. If you don’t have Egyptian Walking Onions, you can use scallions in this quiche recipe instead.
Can you make a quiche the night before?
If you’re entertaining and trying to save time, you can pre-make the pie crust and place it in the pie pan in the refrigerator. Then, slice the cheese, fry the bacon, and chop the green onions.
Keep them in separate containers in the refrigerator. Then, right before you want to eat, you can assemble the quiche and bake it.
I would not mix up all of the ingredients and let it sit in the refrigerator overnight.
Variations to my asparagus and bacon quiche recipe
Now, if you’d like to try a bacon asparagus frittata, learn how to make a frittata to use up leftover veggies and meat. Or, you could use the same recipe below to make a ham and asparagus quiche or a steak and asparagus quiche.
Then, just alter the ingredients a bit to fit what you have on hand.

Plus, it’s very easy to customize. You can add any type of vegetable, for instance.
What food goes well with quiche?
We tend to see quiche as a complete meal. But, if you want to serve something with it, a cup of chicken noodle soup is a wonderful pairing. Or, if it’s summertime, you can always serve it with a fresh garden salad.
My roasted asparagus is a nice side dish if you don’t already have asparagus in the quiche. Or, you could try roasted potatoes.
How long do you let quiche cool?
You can eat either cold or warm quiche depending on the season and your preferences. If you want to eat it warm, let it cool at least 10 to 20 minutes so that it slices more easily.
How do you tell if a quiche is done?
It is not done if you shake the quiche and the center jiggles. The center should be firm and should not move when you shake the side of the pie plate.
To be certain, use a knife or a toothpick and insert it in the center of the quiche. If it comes out clean, it’s done. If not, cook it more.
Bacon Quiche Recipe
If asparagus is not your thing, you can make a plain bacon quiche recipe. Just leave the asparagus out and add a bit more bacon.

Can you put raw bacon in a quiche?
Yes, you can. Be sure to cut up the bacon int small pieces. It won’t get crunchy like if you cooked it ahead of time.
But, you can definitely put raw bacon in a quiche if you want to save time.

Asparagus and Bacon Quiche Recipe
This asparagus bacon quiche with walking onions is one of my favorites. Make this asparagus quiche recipe today.
Ingredients
- 1 9" pie crust, bottom only
- 8 slices of bacon, cooked & crumbled
- 1 cup asparagus spears, cooked & chopped
- 1 cup of shredded Swiss cheese
- 2 cups of heavy cream
- 2 tbsp Egyptian Walking Onions or scallions, chopped
- 4 eggs, beaten
- salt & pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425F.
- Place the chopped asparagus, chopped Egyptian Walking Onions or Scallions and cooked, crumbled bacon in the bottom of a 9" pie crust.
- Top with the shredded Swiss cheese.
- Beat the 4 eggs with the 2 cups of heavy cream.
- Pour it over the ingredients in the 9" pie crust.
- Place the quiche on a cookie sheet in case of spills.
- Bake in a preheated oven for 15 minutes.
- Turn the oven down to 300F and cook for 30 more minutes or until golden brown.
- Let the quiche sit for at least 10 minutes before you cut it.
Notes
You can use scallions if you do not have walking onions.

I have been intolerant to egg whites for about a year now. I’m hoping once our chickens start laying eggs, I’ll be able to eat them since I’ll be able to control what the chickens are eating.
That must be really difficult. Hopefully having your own chickens will fix the problem!

I’ve never heard of Egyptian Walking onions. Can you find them in stores anywhere?
I’ve never seen them in the store. I got several at a plant sale years ago and planted them in the garden. You can substitute scallions if you can’t find them.
I love asparagus, I’ve been eating it like crazy since it’s back in season and this is a wonderful way to serve it!
I have some more in the refrigerator I am trying to decide what to do with it next!

Walking onions are the coolest thing I’ve EVER heard of. I’m going to try ordering some online. Do they taste like regular green onions? Your quiche looks wonderful too. I adore asparagus and quiche. A match made in heaven!
Yes, the green part tastes very similar to a scallion. If you let the bulb form on top (in the fall), it’s quite small but works well to toss in soups and chilis. Just make sure you let some of the re-plant.
