The idea started when I was thinking about how well strawberries, chocolate, Brie, and walnuts complement each other. I wanted something a little different from the usual grilled cheese, and this sweet-and-savory sandwich was the result.

Strawberry, Brie, Chocolate and Walnut Grilled Cheese

I originally considered roasting the strawberries, but honestly, I wanted something quick and easy. Fresh sliced strawberries work beautifully here. They add a little sweetness and a juicy burst of flavor without requiring any extra preparation.

And while dark chocolate would work for some people, I’m definitely a milk chocolate person. The milk chocolate melts beautifully alongside the creamy Brie, while the strawberries add freshness and the walnuts provide just the right amount of crunch.

The finished sandwich is crispy, buttery, creamy, chocolatey, fruity, and crunchy all at once. It may sound like an unusual combination, but that’s exactly what makes it so much fun.

Why You’ll Love This Strawberry Brie Grilled Cheese

  • Sweet and savory: Creamy Brie, fresh strawberries, and chocolate create a surprisingly delicious combination.
  • Quick and easy: There’s no need to roast the strawberries. Fresh berries make this sandwich simple enough for a weekday lunch.
  • Great texture: Crisp buttery bread, melty Brie, juicy strawberries, and crunchy walnuts give every bite something different.
  • A fun change from traditional grilled cheese: If you’re tired of the same old cheese sandwich, this is worth trying.
  • Perfect for brunch or lunch: It also makes a fun addition to a brunch menu when you want something a little unexpected.

Strawberry, Brie, Chocolate and Walnut Grilled Cheese Ingredients

Strawberry, Brie, Chocolate and Walnut Grilled Cheese Ingredients

You only need a handful of ingredients to make this unusual grilled sandwich:

  • Sliced bread
  • Brie cheese
  • Fresh strawberries
  • Milk chocolate
  • Chopped walnuts
  • Butter

What Kind of Bread Should You Use?

A sturdy bread works best for this sandwich. Sourdough, French bread, or a good-quality white or multigrain bread will all work well.

You want something substantial enough to hold the melted Brie, strawberries, chocolate, and walnuts without becoming soggy.

Can You Use Dark Chocolate?

Absolutely. I prefer milk chocolate because I don’t care for dark chocolate, but you can use whichever type you enjoy.

A semi-sweet chocolate would also be delicious if you want something between milk and dark chocolate.

Fresh or Roasted Strawberries?

I use fresh strawberries because they’re quick and easy. Simply slice them and add them to the sandwich.

If you have extra time, roasting the strawberries will give them a deeper, more concentrated flavor. But don’t feel like you need to take that extra step—the fresh strawberries are delicious.

How to Make Strawberry Brie Grilled Cheese

  1. Prepare the strawberries. Wash and slice the strawberries. Pat them dry so there isn’t excess moisture in the sandwich.
  2. Butter the bread. Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. The buttered side will go against the skillet.
  3. Build the sandwich. Place one slice of bread butter-side down. Add slices of Brie, followed by the strawberries, milk chocolate, and chopped walnuts.
  4. Add the second slice of bread. Place it on top with the buttered side facing up.
  5. Grill the sandwich. Heat a skillet over medium-low heat. Cook the sandwich until the bottom is golden brown and crisp.
  6. Flip carefully. Cook the other side until golden and the Brie and chocolate have melted.
  7. Rest and serve. Let the sandwich sit for a minute or two before slicing. The filling will be very hot and melty.

Tips for Making the Best Grilled Cheese

Don’t use the heat too high. The bread can brown before the Brie and chocolate have a chance to melt. Medium-low heat gives everything time to warm through.

Don’t overload the sandwich. It’s tempting to add lots of filling, but a moderate amount of each ingredient makes the sandwich easier to grill and eat.

Dry the strawberries first. Fresh strawberries contain quite a bit of moisture, so patting them dry helps keep the bread crisp.

Use room-temperature butter. Soft butter spreads more easily and gives you an even layer on the bread.

Let it cool briefly before eating. The melted Brie and chocolate will be extremely hot right off the skillet.

A Surprisingly Delicious Grilled Sandwich

I have to admit, I felt a little decadent eating a sandwich containing chocolate. My husband also gave me a very skeptical look when he saw what I was putting between two slices of bread!

But once everything started melting together, I knew I had a winner.

The creamy Brie and milk chocolate become soft and gooey, the buttered bread gets wonderfully crisp, and the strawberries add a fresh sweetness that keeps the sandwich from feeling too heavy. The walnuts bring in a satisfying crunch that ties everything together.

If you enjoy experimenting with sweet and savory flavors, this Strawberry, Brie, Chocolate and Walnut Grilled Cheese is definitely one to try.

It’s a little unexpected, incredibly easy to make, and a fun way to turn an ordinary grilled cheese sandwich into something special.

Strawberry, Brie, Chocolate and Walnut Grilled Cheese Recipe

A sweet and savory grilled cheese sandwich made with creamy Brie, fresh strawberries, milk chocolate, and crunchy walnuts. Crispy, buttery bread surrounds a warm, melty filling for a fun twist on traditional grilled cheese.

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 8 minutes
Total Time: 13 minutes
Servings: 2 sandwiches

Ingredients

  • 4 slices sturdy sandwich bread, such as sourdough or French bread
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 4 ounces Brie cheese, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup fresh strawberries, thinly sliced
  • 2 ounces milk chocolate, broken into small pieces
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts

Instructions

  1. Prepare the ingredients. Wash and dry the strawberries thoroughly, then slice them thinly. Slice the Brie and break the chocolate into small pieces.
  2. Butter the bread. Spread about 1/2 tablespoon of softened butter over one side of each slice of bread.
  3. Build the sandwiches. Place two slices of bread butter-side down. Divide the Brie between the two slices, followed by the sliced strawberries, milk chocolate, and chopped walnuts. Top each sandwich with another slice of bread, butter-side up.
  4. Heat the skillet. Place a large skillet over medium-low heat. Allow it to warm for a minute or two.
  5. Grill the sandwiches. Place the sandwiches in the skillet. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, or until the bottoms are golden brown and crisp.
  6. Flip carefully. Turn the sandwiches over and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes. The bread should be golden and crisp, while the Brie and chocolate should be melted and gooey.
  7. Rest and serve. Transfer the sandwiches to a cutting board and let them rest for 1 to 2 minutes. Slice in half and serve warm.

Recipe Tips

  • Keep the heat at medium-low. This gives the Brie and chocolate time to melt without burning the bread.
  • Dry the strawberries well. Excess moisture can make the sandwich soggy.
  • Don’t overfill the sandwich. A little of each ingredient goes a long way.
  • Use your favorite chocolate. Milk chocolate is my preference, but semi-sweet or dark chocolate can be substituted.
  • Try different nuts. Pecans or almonds would also work well if you don’t have walnuts.

What Does Strawberry Brie Grilled Cheese Taste Like?

This sandwich has a little bit of everything. The Brie is creamy and mild, the strawberries add fresh sweetness, the chocolate melts into rich pockets throughout the sandwich, and the walnuts provide a satisfying crunch.

The crisp, buttery bread brings all of those flavors together. It’s definitely not your everyday grilled cheese, but that’s part of the fun!

Serving Suggestions

This sandwich is delicious for lunch, brunch, or even a light dinner. Serve it with a simple green salad or fresh fruit for a complete meal.

For an extra-special brunch, cut each sandwich into smaller pieces and serve them as an appetizer or finger food.

  2. My 14 year old and my S.O. would melt if I could go to the store and bring the ingredients back to make this for breakfast!! I might just do that! Thanks for the inspiration!

    • I made it and loved how it turned out. I bought a loaf of french bread and added prosciutto to appeal to the masses. It was a hit. I might just skip the family dinner and have that again. Oh, but I need breakfast for tomorrow. Darn! I’ll save the balance of the ingredients to make another serving for 4 tomorrow.

        • I just stumbled upon this again from when I made it by browsing my old Instagram posts. I can’t believe I had forgotten about it. This is definitely one of my fave recipes. It’s about that time to make it again. For some reason, I’ve had a craving for bananas lately. A few thin slices of banana might make a great addition, too!
