If your legs are irritated after you shave, it could be because you haven’t used an aftershave. No, aftershave is not just for men.

Aftershave helps to close your pores, prevent infection, and soothe irritation.  Men are not the only ones that need this type of help after they shave.

If I don’t use an aftershave when I’m done shaving, my legs break out in little red, itchy, irritating bumps. Not only is that not a great fashion look, but it also itches and burns.

All of the aftershaves I found in the store were made for men or smelled strongly of perfume.   I really don’t enjoy super strong scents and I definitely didn’t want to use an aftershave that was made for men.

Thankfully, I learned how to make your own aftershave for women and found that it was really quite simple.

Can you make your own aftershave?

Yes, you definitely can. This simple recipe uses natural ingredients and is relatively inexpensive to make.

You can change up the essential oils depending on what your favorite scents are. Rose is wonderful if you want to feel pampered.

Peppermint oil is invigorating. Or, lavender is relaxing.

You can use this DIY aftershave for your legs, underarms, or your bikini area. It’s an aftershave recipe that works equally well everywhere.

Recipe for mens aftershave

You can really use this same recipe to make an aftershave for a man. Just change up the scents to be a bit more manly.

Try sandalwood or frankincense. Or, black pepper and vetiver would work well too. Experiment until you find a combination that you like.

Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp pure witch hazel
  • 5 tbsp Heinz apple cider vinegar
  • 10 drops of your favorite essential oil – do NOT use fragrance oil as it may irritate your skin

ingredients and tablespoons on a white background

Directions for this aftershave

  • Mix all of the ingredients in a small bottle or container.
  • Put the cap or lid on and store it in the dark for at least a week before you use it.
  • I store mine in the refrigerator.
  • When you are ready to use it, shake it gently, take off the cap and pour a little bit in your palm. Rub your hands together and smooth on your legs.

How do you make natural aftershave in different scents?

I enjoy making this with orange flower essential oil.  It’s a sweet, fruity scent that I enjoy.

If you want something less fruity, I have added lavender essential oil to mine as well.  If you want to make this for a man, you can add peppermint or wintergreen essential oil or you could use sandalwood essential oil.

Sandalwood is a rather strong scent so you might want to use only eight drops of essential oil instead of ten.

  2. This is awesome, reminds me of the facial toner that I made a while back, but I love the fact that there’s essential oils in there to give your legs a bit of moisture after shaving!
