Paleo Cherry Crumble Recipe
It can be a real challenge to find Paleo desserts. Most desserts in the standard American diet are heavy in carbs, sugar, and grains. None of those work for the paleo diet or for most healthy diets.
Of course, since this Paleo Cherry Crumble is paleo, it’s also dairy free and gluten free so it works for people who follow those diets as well.
A Crumble or Brown Betty actually have British origins. When my Mom made it when I was a child, it had lots of sugar mixed with the fresh fruit and was topped with oats, all purpose flour, and butter.
None of those things (except the fresh fruit) are paleo so it required a bit of a rework to make this a healthy dessert I could enjoy on the Paleo diet.
Years ago, when I lived a few hours north, I found a small orchard that let people pick their own cherries. I really love going to the pick your own places but the only ones that I’ve found in this area are strawberries, apples, and potatoes.
Since I haven’t been able to find a pick your own cherry place locally, I started with fresh, organic cherries from our food co-op.
Best fruit for a crumble or cobbler
You could easily modify this Paleo dessert to feature peaches, plums, strawberries or any other type of fresh fruit that was in season in your area.
Can I use frozen fruit?
I haven’t tried this grain free cherry cobbler with frozen fruit, but you could probably do that as well as long as the frozen fruit didn’t have any added sugar or sweetener.
This is one of my favorite low carb cherry desserts. Do you have a favorite way to enjoy fresh cherries?
