Candles also play an important role in many of our holiday celebrations. Ever since I learned the legend of the Bayberry candle, we burn them on New Year’s Eve.

One of my favorite type of everyday candle are the ones made from beeswax. There are lots of benefits of beeswax candles from the aesthetic to the lack of soot when you burn them. 

They are better for the environment than candles that are made from paraffin wax. And, they don’t release harmful chemicals when you burn them.

How to care for beeswax candles

Caring for your candles properly can make all the difference when it comes time to burn them. 

Always keep candles out of the reach of children and pets. Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to one-quarter inch each time before you light it.

If your beeswax candle has a dusty-looking surface, this is called the “bloom” and is a dust-like film that forms on pure beeswax candles. It’s a sign of purity.

You can simply wipe it off with a clean cloth or use a hairdryer on it.

How to burn beeswax candles

• Tealights – Always burn them in the cup they come in. To maximize burn time, burn them for at least 1.5 hours per burn. This helps make to make sure all of the wax is used.

• Votives – Be sure to burn your votive candle in a votive cup holder. These types of holders are designed to help your votive to keep its shape. When you burn your votive, it will develop a pool in the center. If your container is too wide, the wax will spill out over the side and not be burned.

• Tapers – Always keep tapers away from drafts. To blow it out, place your hand behind the flame and blow gently. use a snuffer to put out the flame to minimize smoking. To help prevent dripping, never trim the wick on tapers.

• Pillars – To eliminate smoke when extinguishing always use a tool to drip wax from the pool in the center onto the wick. Burn pillars according to the directions on the label. Depending on the size, you will need to burn them each time between 90 minutes and a few hours.

How to store beeswax candles

The best way to store your candles is to keep them in their original box. If they did not come in a box, you can wrap them loosely in tissue paper. 

They do not need to be refrigerated but should be kept out of direct sunlight. Properly stored, this type of candle can be kept for years.
