Getting older brings along with it a number of problems but finding ways to manage your joint stiffness doesn’t have to be one of them. Our joints help keep us moving and that helps us stay active and maintain a healthy weight. One of the things that I’ve been dealing with as I get older is maintaining my weight and controlling stiffness to stay active daily. Some days are easier than others so I’ve been trying to make small changes to have more good days than bad.
10 Simple Ways to Manage Your Joint Stiffness
I didn’t take great care of my body when I was younger. I didn’t make healthy food choices and I wasn’t careful about how I worked and moved. I have a repetitive motion injury in my shoulder and chronic back problems. When I hurt, I don’t want to exercise and my range of motion is limited. I’m finding that I just can’t do my yoga stretches on some days because I’m stiff. Finding ways to manage your joint stiffness can be one step in the right direction.
Over the years, our bodies and the condition of our joints change due to normal wear and tear, injuries and changes our bodies go through as we age. Here are a few ways to manage your joint stiffness:
- Be certain that the shoes you choose have proper arch support and cushioning. If they don’t, you could be putting unnecessary strain on your back, knees, and hips.
- Keep moving. The more you move, the less stiff you will be. If you have a sedentary job (like me), take frequent breaks to change positions and stretch.
- Lose weight. Even a little bit of extra weight can take a toll on your joints. Begin by making healthy food choices like starting the day with a delicious berry smoothie instead of a less healthy choice. Just add yogurt and frozen berries to your blender and pulse until blended.
- Stretch before exercise. Before you get going with your daily workout, take a few minutes to stretch and warm up your muscles and joints.
- Choose low impact exercises. If you’re trying to manage your joint stiffness, go with low-impact exercises like yoga, walking or swimming.
- Work on your posture and your core. Working on your core muscles and practicing good posture can help strengthen your muscles.
- Watch what you’re lifting. Be careful how much weight you lift or carry. Ask the baggers at the grocery store to make your bags lighter if that’s an issue.
- Get enough calcium and Vitamin D. Getting enough calcium and Vitamin D can help keep your bones strong.
- Apply ice to stiff spots. If you have stiffness, try to reduce inflammation and help with stiffness by applying an ice pack for twenty minutes.
- Know your limits. Do not push past your limits. Know when enough is enough.
- Treat injuries when they happen. If you’re sore or have stiffness for more than 48 hours, it’s important to speak to your doctor rather than waiting.
- Take a dietary supplement. I have just started taking Osteo Bi-Flex® EASE which supports joint function and mobility. Osteo Bi-Flex® EASE is a small tablet (80% smaller than current Osteo Bi-Flex 1 Per Day Tablet), so it’s easy to take.
Each Osteo Bi-Flex® product contains Joint-Shield™ 5-Loxin® Advanced, a proprietary blend that helps support joint function.* For the next seven days, I’ll be taking Osteo Bi-Flex® EASE and sharing my experience with you. Connect with Osteo Bi-Flex® on Facebook.
Based on two human studies with 5-LOXIN® Advanced where subjects rated their joint health over time, subjects’ joint health improved within 7 days, and continued to improve throughout the duration of the studies. 5-LOXIN® Advanced is a trademark of PL Thomas – Laila Nutra, LLC. U.S. Patent #8,551,496 and international patents pending.
