Did you know that there are ways to promote joint health? As we age, it’s important that we do everything we can to take care of our bodies. Especially as I watched my grandmother get older, I know the importance of maintaining joint health and it has had a huge impact on how I take care of myself. I try to stick to a healthy routine and pay closer attention to the choices I make, because I know they matter. Bone and joint health can be a concern for many, which is why incorporating simple yet healthy practices into your daily routine can make for continuing a happy and active life. Ways to Improve Joint Health

As we head into the cooler months, it may make it difficult to enjoy the outdoor activities that we look forward to, such as apple picking or leisurely walks with family. There are ways to power through the change of seasons – such as engaging in seasonal activities, since maintaining joint health is important all year round. Fall is a time to take a walk outdoors, admire the leaves changing colors, plant autumn flowers and more. During this time (and year-round!) it’s important to not be limited by the change of seasons when you want to be active. Focusing on ways to promote joint health can help you move easier as you age and these simple steps can really make a difference.

Stay Active

Staying active even as you age is one of the best things you can do for yourself and for your joint health. You don’t need to run a marathon to stay active (unless you want to, of course). Walk the dog, embark on a nature walk, toss the ball with the kids or grandkids on the weekend or head to an aerobics class with a friend. Incorporating leisure activities in your routine will keep you moving a little bit every day.

Watch Your Weight

Excess weight can be hard on your bones and your joints. It can lead to back or knee problems as you age. You may not think that an extra five or ten pounds matters, but did you know that losing just one pound takes four pounds of pressure off your knees? Talk to your doctor about the best way to manage your weight.

Work on Your Core

Strengthening abs and back muscles can help maintain a steady balance, which makes it less likely to fall and become injured. Abdominal, back and hip strengthening exercises help build core strength. Both Pilates and yoga are good choices to strengthen your core.

Maintain Joint Health

Staying active each day and eating a healthy diet that’s high in both calcium and vitamin D is an ideal combination to maintain healthy bones and joints. Calcium and vitamin D work together, as calcium is needed for proper bone mass and consuming the appropriate amount can lead to less bone fractures and vitamin D is essential for absorbing calcium within the body, ultimately leading to strengthening bones. Even if you regularly consume nutrient-rich foods like broccoli, kale and dairy products, you may also want to supplement your diet to be sure you’re getting enough calcium and vitamin D. One of the simplest ways for me to do this is by taking Osteo Bi-Flex® NutraJoint & Immune Formula Drink Mix, a drink mix supplement with glucosamine that helps to cushion joints and support cartilage*. This unflavored drink mix contains vitamin D and calcium and is the perfect formula to stir into smoothies. I’ve discovered a delicious fall smoothie recipe using Osteo Bi-Flex® NutraJoint that I want to share with you!

  2. 'Tis the season of pumpkin spice. I do love cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon - all of those delightful spices. Your smoothie looks delicious. I will have to try it for the hubby. He takes a glucosamine pill every day. This might be more fun
