Traveling for the Holidays Safely

Whether you travel near or far, by car or plane, it’s important to keep yourself, your family, and your belongings safe. Here are a few helpful tips that I hope you’ll use before you head out on your next trip.

Prepare your home

Before you leave, make sure that you prepare your home properly. Check that all doors and windows are locked. Stop your mail and newspaper delivery. Invest in a few smart lights so they can come on and off while you’re away. Ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on your home while you’re away.

Check your car

If you’ll be traveling by car, be sure to have it inspected before you leave. Check the tire pressure. Get an oil change. Look for wear and tear on the tires. Make sure that you add a first aid kit and basic emergency supplies to your car before you leave. You never know when you will need them.

Watch your valuables

Unless you absolutely must travel with your valuable jewelry and accessories, consider leaving them at home. It’s best not to tempt criminals by wearing flashy jewelry or carrying your most expensive luxury bag with you. Instead of bringing your digital camera, consider getting an inexpensive disposable one just in case.

Only the necessities

Do you really need to bring along every credit card and form of identification that you own? If your wallet or bag is stolen, consider how difficult it will be to get all of them replaced. Instead, take only the ID and credit card you need to have and leave the rest at home or in a bank deposit box.

Label belongings

If you do happen to leave your watch, water bottle, cell phone or beach bag behind. Make sure that your belongings are labeled with your name, address, and phone number. If someone does find them, they’ll be able to be sure the item finds its way back to you. The best way to stay organized while traveling this summer is with the Mabel’s Label travel pack! 1. Oh boy! For the first time since 2004 we are traveling for Christmas. We are leaving here and heading north to Wisconsin! Ugh. Cold, snow, and a little more cold. We are planning some fun stuff: skiing, sledding, ice skating, and a Packers game. But it's going to be cold. I am also very afraid of our 1 1/2 year old as a lap baby on the planes! ACK! I wish we were staying at home shoveling…..

  2. Just this evening my husband and I talked about how nice it would be to take a couple of month off and go to Costa Rica this winter. We are sure to have snow here in Quebec as well, and none of us like shoveling!
