Simple handmade Christmas gifts are always high on my list of craft projects to work on. I do love to craft but I don’t have a lot of time to work on large, complicated crafts. I prefer simple handmade Christmas gifts that I can complete in an afternoon.
Silk Ribbon Embroidery Bookmark
Silk ribbon embroidery is a craft that looks like it takes much longer than it actually does. You can do silk ribbon embroidery on cross stitch material, embroidery material, clothes, pillows, and even on heavy card stock to create a beautiful silk ribbon embroidery bookmark.
What type of silk ribbon do I need?
Silk ribbon embroidery is a hand embroidery technique that uses 100% pure silk ribbon and six strand cotton embroidery floss. The stitches are sewn using a crewel needle which has a larger eye that makes it possible to thread the silk ribbon through it.
You need 100% silk ribbons when you do embroidery. This set is a great starter set that has a wide variety of colors.
It’s very important when you are creating the stitches that you make sure to keep the ribbon flat, smooth, and loose. do not allow it to curl and fold or your designs won’t come out correctly.
There are many different types of stitches you can make. I’ve been doing silk ribbon embroidery for a while and still tend to stick to the basic silk ribbon embroidery stitches.
Supplies:
- A variety of pure silk ribbons in 18″ lengths
- Crewel needle
- White embroidery floss
- Heavy cardboard stock for the bookmark back
- Brads (optional)
Where to buy silk ribbon for embroidery
You may be able to find it in your local craft store. But, I usually get mine from Amazon.
Using the basic silk ribbon embroidery stitches, choose a design that works well for your bookmark. You can do a random flower pattern all over the bookmark or only at the edge or only on one corner.
It really depends on what you like. I’m going to create a series of looped flowers on my silk ribbon embroidery bookmark.
For the center of the flower, I am using different colored brads. You can leave it blank if you prefer.
