How to Choose a Safe Full Spectrum Sunscreen

Last Updated on June 24, 2019 by Ellen Christian

Do you know if your current sunscreen is a safe full spectrum sunscreen? Do you know why it should be? The weather is getting warmer again, and our local beach has opened for the season. Watching the waves against the sand and listening to the gulls is one of the most peaceful ways I know of to spend a lazy summer afternoon. I grab a water bottle with infused water, a book, my camera and my sunscreen, and I’m all set for the day. I wander around on the beach and walk through the waves. I dig my toes in the sand. I walk out on the boat dock and close my eyes and daydream. This post has been sponsored and contains affiliate links.

Because I’m fair skinned, I never go outside without wearing sunscreen. Whether I’m gardening, doing yard work or relaxing at the beach, I always make sure to use sunscreen first. One thing I have learned is that not all sunscreen is created equally. There are two different types of UV light that can harm your skin: UVA and UVB. A full spectrum sunscreen will protect you from both types of light. The UVA light can prematurely age your skin, and the UVB light is the one that most frequently damages the outer layer of your skin causing redness and burning. It’s also the one that plays a key role in the development of skin cancer.

Because I’m concerned with the ingredients I put in and on my body, I want to use a safe full spectrum sunscreen. There are all sorts of scary ingredients you can find in many sunscreens. I look for natural ingredients like Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide, which are natural minerals that cover the surface of your skin to block UVA and UVB rays. I feel much better using sunscreens with these ingredients rather than chemical sunscreens.

Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen are dermatologist recommended. They uses a Titanium Dioxide & Zinc Oxide formula (SPF 30+)  to keep you safe from both UVA and UVB rays. There are a number of different formulations including Regular, Sport (water resistant), Face, Sensitive, and Baby. You can even get the regular, sport, and baby formulas by the gallon for those who spend a lot of time outside. For others, you can purchase it by the tube or by the bottle. Blue Lizard is manufactured in the USA using the highest quality ingredients.

One of the features of the Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen that I appreciate is the color changing bottle. The patented BPA-free Smart Bottle™ changes colors in the presence of harmful UV rays, reminding you to cover up. The 5oz bottles change color, and the lids on the 3oz tubes do as well.

I love the Sensitive Skin formula because it contains no parabens and no fragrance, and the kids use the Sport version because they are in and out of the water so often. It lasts up to 80 minutes.

  10. I found this on their FAQ page and I love it!  What a great way to remind me to reapply sunscreen!

WHY DOES THE BLUE LIZARD® BOTTLE (3 OZ. CAP) CHANGE COLOR?
Crown Laboratories has incorporated a dye in the plastic that is sensitive to UV. This is to serve as an indicator of the presence of UV rays and a reminder to wear sunscreen.

That is is just neat to me!
