Russian Cheese Salad Recipe
There are many favorite Russian dishes that we’ve added to our winter meal planning. You may have enjoyed Beef Stroganoff and Blini a few times in the past as well.
This Russian Cheese Salad is a wonderful addition to your holiday meal planning. It can be prepared at the last minute and the ingredients cost very little.
If you find yourself in need of a last minute side dish, you probably already have these ingredients in your pantry.
If you’re watching your carbs during the holidays, this low carb side dish option is a delicious option rather than potatoes or pasta.
What is Russian cheese?
You can use any type of hard cheese with this recipe. If you want authentic Russian cheese, according to my friend, the closest we have here in the US is Gouda cheese or possibly Havarti cheese.
If you have an ethnic market in your area, I’ve been told that this works well with Golandsky cheese. This is a favorite of the Russian people and means Dutch in Russian.
If you cannot find any of these varieties of cheese at the store, you can make it with mozzarella cheese. Shredded mozzarella cheese is affordable and can be found almost anywhere.

What do I serve Russian Cheese Salad with?
Russian Cheese Salad makes a great accompaniment to your favorite main dish. Serve it with grilled meats, roasted vegetables, or hearty soups and stews.
It also goes nicely with a light salad of greens if you’re looking for something refreshing to start off the meal.
You can also serve it with assorted meats and bread or crackers as a light lunch. Add a few tomato slices or a fresh garden salad.
Traditionally, you would eat with crackers or spoon onto tomato slices. This is a wonderful recipe if you are hosting for the holidays. Check out these hosting lunch ideas for more options.
Origins of Russian Cheese Salad
This dish is believed to have originated in the Ukraine. It is a traditional and popular side dish in Russia and other countries of the former Soviet Union.
It has become a favorite holiday recipe here in the United States, as it adds great flavor and a creamy texture to any meal.
It’s also been called Paris in the Snow salad because of the white, fluffy texture of the ingredients. No matter what you call it, it’s a favorite of the Russian people in the winter.
