Marinated Pepper Steak Recipe
This pepper steak recipe uses low sodium soy sauce and sirloin steak. It’s one of my favorite stir fry recipes and can be customized based on what you have on hand.
This is one of our favorite easy weeknight meals. It’s a delicious meal you can have on the table in less than 30 minutes.
While many people cook this pepper steak recipe in a wok, all you really need is a large skillet.
Is soy sauce keto?
Soy sauce is technically keto-friendly because it has low net carbs. However, it is not a very clean product. If you want, you can try gluten free soy sauce (coconut aminos) instead.
Soy sauce is very common in the list of marinade ingredients in most recipes.

Benefits of marinating beef strips
Marinating the steak strips helps to lock in the natural juices and tenderize the meat. It also makes them extra flavorful!
Marination also prevents proteins from becoming tough when cooked at high temperatures. It is important to choose a marinade that won’t overpower the flavor of the beef, such as this simple one with soy sauce, garlic, and pepper.
Marinating beef also helps to make a tough cut of beef into tender steak. It’s a great recipe to make when you have a tougher cut of meat like chuck roast.
What is pepper steak?
Pepper steak is a Chinese-American dish that combines beef and bell peppers, onion, and garlic in a flavorful sauce. It can be served over rice or noodles, although if you’re following the keto diet it’s best to serve it with cauliflower rice or zucchini noodles.
Authentic Chinese pepper steak recipe would probably be made with flank steak. It would have red bell peppers, bean sprouts, onions, and bamboo shoots. Try it instead of Chinese takeout one night.
Best steak for pepper steak?
Sirloin steak is the best option for this recipe, as it has great flavor and texture. It can easily be cut into thin strips for stir-frying and is a leaner cut of beef than other options.
If you’re on a budget, try chuck roast. The marinade helps to tenderize the meat, so sirloin steak turns out amazing!
Best peppers for pepper steak?
For this recipe, we recommend using red, green, and yellow bell peppers. You can also use cubanelle or banana peppers.
These are milder than other varieties of peppers and have a sweeter flavor. They also look beautiful when cut into thin strips for the stir fry!

Keto soy sauce
I always buy this brand. It tastes delicious in this pepper steak recipe.

Easy pepper steak modifications
If you are not following the keto diet, you can add a sprinkle of brown sugar to the marinade.
Try making zoodles instead of cauliflower rice.
You can use olive oil if you prefer to save money.
If you prefer spicy food, you can add chili paste to your marinade along with sesame seeds.
Use green onions instead of yellow onions.
Use only green bell pepper if you can find the other colors.
Serve the mixture on lettuce wraps for a low carb lunch.
To meal prep, slice the bell peppers and onions ahead of time and store them in an air tight container.
How to freeze pepper steak?
If you want to freeze this easy pepper steak recipe, it’s super easy. Just let the steak marinate for 30 minutes as directed and then transfer it to an airtight container or a freezer bag. When ready to eat, simply thaw in the refrigerator overnight and cook according to instructions.
Add the green bell peppers and onions when you are cooking the beef strips. You want them to be crisp tender so don’t freeze them ahead of time.
I hope you’ll try my marinated beef pepper steak!
