There’s something wonderfully comforting about baking a pear kuchen. This old-fashioned fruit-topped cake has roots in German and Midwestern baking traditions and feels like the kind of dessert you’d find cooling on a grandmother’s counter.

Old Fashioned Pear Kuchen
Soft, lightly sweetened dough, juicy fruit, and a buttery cinnamon topping come together in a cake that’s perfect for breakfast, brunch, or dessert.
This version uses pears, but it’s incredibly flexible—peaches and apples work beautifully too. The result is a tender, lightly yeasted cake that sits somewhere between coffee cake and fruit dessert.
What Is a Kuchen?
“Kuchen” is the German word for “cake,” but in baking, it usually refers to a soft, lightly sweetened dough topped with fruit and often finished with a crumb or streusel topping. German immigrants brought kuchen recipes to the Midwest, where they became especially popular in states like North Dakota, South Dakota, and Kansas.
Unlike traditional cakes, kuchen often uses yeast along with baking powder, creating a unique texture that’s both tender and slightly bread-like.
