Make Your Own Shaving Cream
I love making my own beauty and personal care products. There are so many questionable ingredients in store-bought beauty products, that it’s often safe to make your own. If you’re looking for the easiest DIY shaving cream, keep reading! It uses only a few natural ingredients.
Have you had a chance to try these romantic essential oils yet? Or, check out this free essential oil diffuser blends sheet for some new ideas.
Is this shaving cream for men or women?
The only real difference in homemade shaving cream for dad or for mom is the scent. They both really use the same ingredients.
But, because many women appreciate more feminine scents like rose or chamomile, they are often different than their more masculine counterparts.
If you’re making this for a man, they might enjoy cedarwood more than lavender.
How long will this shaving cream last?
How long this shaving cream lasts will really depend on how much you use when you shave. You will use more shaving your legs than you will shaving your face.
This recipe should make enough for several applications provided you don’t go crazy with it. Store it in the refrigerator when you are not using it.
What types of essential oils can I use?
You can really use just about any type of essential oil you like. Here are a few suggestions to start with. Why not try a new one each time you make it?
What can be used as a substitute for shaving cream?
If you don’t happen to have any shaving cream on hand and you don’t have time to make your own, there are substitutions.
You can easily shave with hair conditioner, some body washes, or coconut oil. Coconut oil is the most natural option.
So, how can you use coconut oil as shaving cream? Just slather on a layer of coconut oil on your legs and use a very sharp razor.
If the coconut oil is solid, just rub it between your hands for a few minutes until it liquifies.
Is it better to shave with warm or cold water?
It is always best to shave with hot water because it opens up your pores. When your pores are open, the razor will be able to cut the hair follicle closer to the skin.
This will result in a smoother shave. After you’re done shaving, you can use cold water to close your pores.
Homemade shaving cream that lathers
This cream doesn’t really lather when you put it on your face. But, because you whip it when you make it, it does have the feel and appearance of lather.
The foam you see in store-bought shaving creams is made by the chemicals that are used. The glycerin, lanoline, Stearic acid, and triethanolamine give shaving cream the ability to lather.
And, you don’t want these in your shaving cream. This natural recipe will work just as well and be much better for your skin.
Ingredients to get started
- ⅓ cup shea butter
- ⅓ cup coconut oil
- 2 tablespoons apricot kernel oil or grapeseed oil
- 1 tablespoon arrowroot powder
- 15 drops essential oils
How do you make shaving cream?
- Melt the shea butter and coconut oil in a double boiler or in the microwave. If you use a microwave, heat in 30-second intervals and stir at each interval.
- When it is melted, add the carrier oil and stir.
- Place in the fridge until hardened, about half an hour.
- Use a hand mixer to whip the shea butter and oils.
- Add the arrowroot powder and essential oils.
- Mix until light and fluffy.
