Keeping kids busy in the winter can be a challenge.  In Vermont, we have many days during the winter that are right around the zero mark or lower.  As much as the kids love to go outside to play, it’s not possible for very long at those temperatures. Keeping kids busy in the winter generally involves some sort of indoor play or activity.  One of the things that I struggle with when keeping kids busy in the winter is that the kids get tired of the same toys and games that they play with every day.  They want to do something different.  Here are a few suggestions I use when keeping kids busy in the winter.

Keeping kids busy in the winter

Keeping kids busy in the winter

  • Arts and crafts projects – Kids love to make things.  I try to keep on hand supplies likes crayons, colored pencils, glue sticks, popsicle sticks, pom poms, glitter, and construction paper. Don’t forget to add in fun nature items like seeds, leaves, pine cones, and acorns. Change up the supplies regularly so the kids don’t get bored.
  • Make them think – Kids love to think and explore new topics. Introduce them to a new project that gets them thinking about nature and the world around them. How about bird watching at the feeder in the back yard or a discussion on foods from Mexico when you have tacos for dinner.
  • Reading is fundamental – Reading books is the perfect way to keep your kids learning and thinking.  Make sure that they have books on topics they enjoy but introduce new topics to them as well.  If your son loves basketball, try a book on baseball or soccer as well.  If your daughter loves stories about cats, try introducing stories about puppies next time.
  • Online time – While we limit the amount of time that we let the kids spend online, there are some great apps out there that will encourage learning and help with keeping kids busy in the winter.  I find that apps are perfect when I need to do something that requires my undivided attention like making dinner.  An educational app is perfect for them to work on at the kitchen table while I’m cooking and gives me enough time to think about what I need to do.

Of course, now you’re wondering where you’re going to come up with the time to make sure you always have a new supply of craft projects, books, experiments, and apps for your kids to play with. I know I certainly don’t have time to run out to the store every week and pick up new things or put together new projects. I run out of ideas and then the kids get bored.  Bored kids mean one stressed out mom and no one likes that.  BabbaBoxes are monthly subscription boxes that take the work out of keeping kids busy in the winter.  Each month, you will receive a subscription box that has activities and supplies to allow your kids to create, explore, story tell and connect.  You’ll get  ALL the physical materials plus know-how content to really engage with your kids and keep them busy.

Luckily where we live it isn't cold for long. I like these ideas. We try and bring their outdoor toys in so they can still ride around the house. It works for now but I'm sure we will have to think of something else when they get older.
