I hope these holiday hosting ideas will help you have a stress free holiday season this year. We’ve hosted Christmas at our home for several years now. My parents live about 30 minutes from us so it’s easiest for us to have Christmas at our house rather than have Marty, me, the kids and their significant others drive to my parent’s home.

Holiday Hosting Ideas
Just because having the holidays at our home makes the most sense, doesn’t mean that it doesn’t bring along its own stress. Planning and executing dinner for eight people always bring along a few unexpected surprises. Here are a few tips that should help minimize a bit of the stress.
Potluck
If your family is willing, asking everyone to bring a dish can help take some of the work off you. Of course, not everyone feels comfortable with this. But, you should at least be able to ask people to bring along a plate of Christmas cookies or a dessert. This means one less dish that you’ll have to prepare.
Self Serve
Have you considered allowing guests to serve themselves from the kitchen and bring their plates to the table? This eliminates the number of serving dishes on the main table. And, also eliminates passing dishes back and forth while you’re trying to eat.
Linen Service
We generally use cloth tablecloths and napkins for holiday dinners. While I love the elegance and the fact that I’m not throwing away lots of disposables, it can be extra work to launder and remove stains. Consider using a linen service if that’s one of your concerns.
Cleaning Service
If you run around like a crazy person before the guest arrives, save yourself a few hours or days of work and have a cleaning service clean the public areas of your home the day before guests arrive. You won’t believe the amount of stress this removes from your day.
Appliance Upgrade
When you’re hosting the holidays at your home, it’s important that you have appliances that can handle your needs. You’ll want to make sure that you have enough burners to handle what you need to prepare along with an oven that’s large enough for a large turkey or ham and whatever other side dishes and desserts you’ll be preparing.

I completely agree!
I need all the stress free tips I can take!
Glad to help!
That is a great deal on appliances. We replaced ours over the last two years.
It really is a great deal!
I honestly would have never thought of a linen service.. brilliant!Â
Thanks, Elicia!
I’m a huge fan of potlucks to decrease the stress on the host. I also love trying and talking about the different foods that people bring. My Mom’s side of the family were great cookers and bakers so I have lovely memories of potlucks. Also I like the informal get-togethers rather than the formal dinners.
I go for informal too, Deb. Much easier.
These are some really great tips and I just found a cleaning service to help me out during times when I am stressed or not feeling well. I always have my guests service themselves as they can choose what they want to eat as well as how much. I do not want to be a “food pusher”.
That’s a great point, Terry!
This is a great idea for stress free holidays.
Thanks, Sara!
