When I was little, I remember going to my Grandmother’s house in northern Vermont. One of the things that I remember the most were all of the beautiful things that she sewed. She could make quilts, clothes and just about anything else you could think of. She had doilies and bureau scarves and all sorts of vintage linens that I did not appreciate at that age. When I was flipping through Gooseberry Patch Stitching for the Kitchen and saw the embroidered cloth napkins project, I knew that I needed to make one.
Embroidered Cloth Napkins Craft
Materials
- Cloth napkin. Make your own or buy them ready made.
- Embroidery thread for your design of choice.
- Hand sewing needle
Directions
You can make the vintage doily table runner as long or as short as you like. Mine is relatively short because I’m using it on a small surface.
- I’m not an expert in embroidery so I try to find a simple set of instructions that isn’t too involved. I still haven’t managed the French knot so I avoid that one 🙂 This book has some gorgeous embroidery designs along with redwork designs that would work as well. There are all sorts of gorgeous sewing patterns and projects.
- Trace the design on your napkin either free style using a pencil or using tracing paper.
- Follow the design using whatever embroidery stitches you know best. I used the back stitch because that is the one I know.
I think these embroidered cloth napkins will be gorgeous for the holidays. You could definitely do all sorts of different types of patterns for different holidays or different seasons of the year. I started with store bought cloth napkins since I have a bunch here already. If you have fabric on hand nor really like sewing, you could easily make your own cloth napkins.
