My family has pretty traditional food favorites. While I can occasionally get away with something different for dinner (like my Unstuffed Cabbage Rolls), most of the time they want your typical American meal choices. Cheeseburgers, macaroni and cheese and spaghetti are the most commonly requested meals. Caramelized Onion Crock Pot Recipe for Burgers
When we have cheeseburgers, I love adding a variety of toppings: ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, lettuce tomato and my favorite caramelized onion crock pot recipe. I just set all the toppings out and let everyone add their favorites. Burgers are the meal I choose when I’m pressed for time. They’re fast and easy to make and can be customized to everyone’s taste. I tend to do mine without the bun. My daughter uses a gluten free bun. The guys use traditional buns. I can add chips or French fries or a tossed salad depending on the time of year and what I have on hand.
This caramelized onion crock pot recipe is super easy because you put everything in the crock pot and then forget about it until dinner time.

Ingredients
- 3 white onions
- 1/4 cup butter - not margarine please
Instructions
- Cut the onions in wide slices and lay them in your crock pot.
- Cut the butter in tablespoons and scatter it across the onions.
- Cook on high for 8-10 hours or until the onions are caramelized.
Because this takes so long to make, you want to start it early in the day. If you eat at 6pm, start this by 8am to have it ready for dinner. You can always turn it down to low if you need to if it’s cooking faster than you thought. Ten hours will make them lightly browned and soft without being mushy.
Now that everyone has their burgers and toppings ready, check out Netflix for some family entertainment. Get up close and comfortable with Wahlburgers as they manage a family owned burger restaurant in Boston. Eating Green is one of my favorite Wahlburgers episodes. Hope you’ll check it out!
