Caramelized Onion Crock Pot Recipe for Burgers

My family has pretty traditional food favorites. While I can occasionally get away with something different for dinner (like my Unstuffed Cabbage Rolls), most of the time they want your typical American meal choices.  Cheeseburgers, macaroni and cheese and spaghetti are the most commonly requested meals.

When we have cheeseburgers, I love adding a variety of toppings: ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, lettuce tomato and my favorite caramelized onion crock pot recipe. I just set all the toppings out and let everyone add their favorites.

Burgers are the meal I choose when I’m pressed for time. They’re fast and easy to make and can be customized to everyone’s taste. I tend to do mine without the bun. My daughter uses a gluten free bun. The guys use traditional buns. I can add chips or French fries or a tossed salad depending on the time of year and what I have on hand.

This caramelized onion crock pot recipe is super easy because you put everything in the crock pot and then forget about it until dinner time.

How long does it take onions to get soft in the Crock Pot?

Onions generally take about 8-10 hours on low or 3-4 hours on high to become soft in the Crock Pot. However, this could vary slightly depending on the size of the onion pieces and the specific slow cooker used. Always check them for your desired level of softness before serving.

Because this takes so long to make, you want to start it early in the day. If you eat at 6pm, start this by 8am to have it ready for dinner. You can always turn it down to low if you need to if it’s cooking faster than you thought. Ten hours will make them lightly browned and soft without being mushy.

What’s the best liquid to caramelize onions in?

The best liquid to caramelize onions in is generally a combination of oil and butter. The oil is great for high heat cooking and helps to prevent the butter from burning, while the butter adds a creamy, delicious flavor to the onions.

Once the onions have cooked down a bit, you can also add a splash of wine (either red or white), broth, or even water to help deglaze the pan and scrape up any bits that have stuck to it. The choice of liquid can influence the final flavor of your caramelized onions, so feel free to experiment until you find a combination you love.

Tips for caramelizing onions in the CrockPot

Caramelizing onions in a CrockPot is a simple and time-saving method. Start by slicing your onions thinly and evenly for uniform cooking. Add the sliced onions to the CrockPot, followed by a drizzle of olive oil or a few dabs of butter for added richness.

Set the CrockPot to low and let the onions cook for about 10 hours. It’s a slow process, but the result is a batch of deeply flavorful, sweet caramelized onions that can be used in a variety of dishes.

Remember to stir occasionally, if possible, to ensure even caramelization.
