Watermelon Lime Aqua Fresca Recipe
It’s so refreshing on a super hot day, to drink an icy cold drink but so many of the traditional summer drinks aren’t healthy. I’m not interested in adding soda, artificial sweeteners, sugar, etc. to my summer drinks.
I want a summer drink that’s refreshing AND healthy. This recipe is exactly that – healthy & refreshing. You might want to try this Watermelon Cooler recipe.
Aqua Fresca is Spanish for fresh waters and is traditionally a combination of water, fruit, and sugar. Realistically, the fruit is sweet enough that you don’t need to add sugar unless you’re doing something tart like lemons, limes, or tart cherries.
I skip the sugar in this Watermelon Lime Aqua Fresca recipe.
If you really don’t think the watermelon is sweet enough, you can add a sweetener but I’d recommend honey or stevia. If you leave the sweetener out, this is a Paleo-approved summer drink.
You may want to use this watermelon slicer. It makes the entire process much easier.
Did you know that National Watermelon day is August 3rd? And, did you know that there are about 300 different watermelon varieties in the United States and Mexico?
We have a short growing period in Vermont so we always grow one that is made for a short growing season otherwise we won’t get any. We don’t have any in our garden yet so I had to get this one at the grocery store.
I’m hoping that by the beginning of September we will have a few small watermelons in our garden.
Watermelon cucumber agua fresca
If you don’t happen to have any limes on hand, you can make a watermelon cucumber aqua fresca by substituting sliced cucumbers. The flavor isn’t exactly the same but it does look just as festive.
If you want to, you can add a splash of bottled lime juice for that lime taste. Your guests will love this watermelon lime aqua fresca recipe this summer.
Or, you might want to try this watermelon and cucumber juice from AllRecipes.
Watermelon and lime benefits
Not only is watermelon delicious, but it also has quite a few health benefits. Watermelon is mostly water so eating more of it is a great way to stay hydrated during the summer. And, watermelon is also high in lycopene and Vitamin C.
We all know that Vitamin C helps boost your immune system. But, did you know that lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that is found in many red fruits and vegetables?
You can find it in tomatoes and papayas but not in strawberries or cherries.

You don’t have to include lime or cucumber if you prefer not to. You can make a watermelon lime agua fresca recipe by simply leaving out the limes, lime juice, and cucumbers.
Your drink will simply be watermelon and water with or without sugar depending on your preferences. It’s a light, refreshing beverage for a hot summer day.
Or, you could serve lime wedges on the side and let your guests decide whether they want to add lime to their drink or not.
The kids enjoy their watermelon by the slice but I enjoy mine in this Watermelon Lime Aqua Fresca recipe. Looking for another refreshing summer beverage?
Why not try making your own root beer.
Now, if you’ve ever tried the Watermelon Cucumber Agua Fresca Subway offers and are wondering if this is similar, it’s similar. My version is much less sweet than the beverage you’ll find at Subway.
They are evidently available at some but not all Subway restaurants in a drink dispenser. Let me know what you think of the comparison.
How to serve this watermelon lime aqua fresca recipe
Now, you can make this by the glass if it’s just you enjoying it. Or, you can make it by the pitcher if you plan on inviting guests over or entertaining.
A glass beverage dispenser with a tight lid makes serving this a breeze. These ice cube ball makers are a fun way to add ice to your drink as well.

Good luck on the ones in your garden. I like the small ones and haven’t had any yet this season either.
Thanks, Deb. I’m hoping we have some soon!
This looks so refreshing. I have a confession to make. I haven’t had a watermelon this year. I know! it’s crazy and that needs to be changed. Happy Sunday.
Thanks, Leslie! This one is my first this year!
