If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you’ll have heard me mention that Marty is disabled. He has permanent nerve damage in his leg and foot from a back injury years ago. Because of his disability, we generally have quite a few prescription medications we need to purchase each month. Unfortunately, his insurance doesn’t cover all of our prescriptions and it has a deductible we have to meet. This means that some of the prescriptions we purchase have an out of pocket cost. In an effort to keep our prescription costs down as much as possible, I took a look at Walgreens’ Prescription Savings Club.
I almost always start my shopping research online so the first place I want was to check out Walgreens.com. I found out that a single person membership to the Walgreens’ Prescription Savings Club cost $20 a year and a family membership which covers up to five people in one family costs $35 a year. Online, you can compare the cost of a prescription drug for members and non-members to see if this plan is right for you. I decided it looked interesting and headed off to Walgreens to get some more information.
I shop at Walgreens fairly regularly because it’s right next to where my daughter works but I’d never filled a prescription there before. I noticed this sign right near the front door when I walked in. I love that the prescription savings club works on both brand name and generic medication. What a great way for us to save even more money. I grabbed a sales flyer and headed back to the pharmacy to sign up. I had a few other things to pick up while I was there and I wanted to check out what was on sale before I shopped.
The pharmacy didn’t have any flyers available about the Prescription Savings Club but the pharmacist answered my questions and gave me a print out of the medications the plan covered. There are three different tiers of payments depending on what prescription you purchase and not all prescriptions will be covered. It was very easy to sign up. All I had to do was give my information to the pharmacist and she entered it into the computer. I ended up going with the family member plan because it would cover all four of us – even my daughter who is 19 and in college. It was very simple to sign up and now I’ll get savings on prescription medications whenever I fill them at Walgreens. I found out that if I transferred a prescription to Walgreens I would receive a $25 Walgreens gift card! I didn’t have a prescription to transfer today but I plan on using this next time to save even more money. This is definitely going to help cover prescriptions that our normal insurance won’t cover.
These are the benefits I get from signing up:
- Valuable discounts on thousands of brand-name and all generic medications
- Between 5 percent and 20 percent discount on most immunizations
- 10 percent bonus on purchases of Walgreens Brand, W Brand, Nice! products and in-store photofinishing services2
- 10 percent savings on services from Take Care ClinicsSM at select Walgreens3
- Savings on preventive and lifestyle medications your insurance may not cover
- Additional discounts on pet medications with a human equivalent, all compounded medications, nebulizers and diabetic supplies
Another benefit to signing up for the Prescription Savings Club is that I earn a 10% bonus on Walgreens brand items and in-store photofinishing. Since we use a variety of Walgreens items regularly, this is a great added savings. One stop shopping at Walgreens will save me both time and money! You can take a look at my whole shopping trip in my Google + album. Don’t forget to connect with Walgreens on Facebook and on Twitter.

So great that the plan will cover your daughter, too!
They do have some great prescription savings options. And I love the selection of products they have too. I will have to look into this more.
I love that they have this program for those that need to save money.
This program has turned out to be even better than I had expected. I love the extra savings I get on Walgreens branded items.
