How to clean your make up brushes so they last longer

Last Updated on September 23, 2020 by Ellen Christian

Along with the cosmetics in my makeup bag, I have a wide range of makeup brushes. It seems like each makeup application requires a different type of brush. I don’t like to replace my makeup brushes any more often than I have to because they can be expensive. However, it’s important to keep them clean because they can harbor dirt, oils and bacteria which are definitely not good for your skin.

It’s very simple to clean your makeup brushes. Simply run them under warm running water and ad a very small amount of a gentle shampoo and work up a lather. You’ll notice that when you run the brush under warm running water, you’ll see the water turn colors from the makeup trapped in the bristles. Once the lather is gone and the water runs clear, your makeup brush is clean. Once the brush is clean, simply lay it on a soft cloth or towel and allow it to air dry completely before you use it again.

There is a special solution for cleaning makeup brushes that professionals use. You can use that as well but I do have very good luck just using a mild shampoo. Make sure it doesn’t have any added conditioner in it though. Buy the best brushes that you can afford and they will last longer with proper care. I don’t generally use the brushes that come along with makeup sets. I buy them separately because I find they’re a higher quality. Have you cleaned your makeup brushes lately?
