Are your cats part of the family? Do you see them as little furry children? Do you talk to them and cuddle with them when you’ve had a tough day? I know that this is the way we feel about our cats.  Since I have been trying to make healthier choices for myself and my family, it really only makes sense that I take steps to make healthier choices for our cats. Of course, choosing a healthy cat food is just as confusing as choosing healthy people food.

Choosing a Healthy Cat Food

So how do you figure out which cat food is healthy and which is not? I guarantee you that the unhealthy foods aren’t going to tell you that on the label.  They all want you to think that their brand is the best choice. How can you tell the difference? Here are a few things I consider when choosing a healthy cat food:

  • Where is it made? My preference is for cat food made in the USA. Picking made in the USA cat food from companies that use strong quality control also helps reduce the chances of feeding your cat food that may have been contaminated with an ingredient that may cause them to be sick.
  • Consider your cats age.  Kittens and seniors don’t have the same nutritional needs.  Look for a cat food that is targeted toward your cat’s specific age.
  • Choose what’s important to you. Are you very concerned about GMO’s? Do you insist on an organic cat food? Are you looking for a gluten free cat food for allergy reasons? Read the labels carefully and make an informed decision.
  • What about protein source? If your cat has allergies, you may want to consider the source of the protein in their cat food.  Speak to your vet about possible allergies and, if they recommend it, look for an anti-allergy protein source.
  • Wet or dry? Much of this is dependent on your cat’s preferences.  Wet food that is broken down into single serving cans may be a good choice for pets who are watching their weight. Dry food may work better for cats that eat a bit of food and then come back later for more.

Choosing a Healthy Cat Food

I recently had the opportunity to be part of an interview with the Only Natural Pet team. Only Natural Pet products are available from Pet360. They believe in using human quality ingredients and not cast offs of lesser quality in their pet foods and treats.  Their products are grain free, contain no high fructose corn syrup and are allergy friendly.  They make all the good choices I want for my family available for our cats. Pet360 believes in helping us making a better life for our pets.

  1. We dont have cats, but I will be passing this information on to friends and family that do. It is important that we make good food choices for our pets like we do ourselves.

  2. Your cats are beautiful.  I have two cats myself, and they are like kids to me.  It’s very important to buy a high quality, healthy cat food for them.  I think it’s definitely worth the extra money to make sure they are getting all of the nutrients they need, and not eating food that could cause harm to them.

  3. I’m not a cat owner but, WOW, this is a great post. I didn’t know you’d have to really look into what we feed them. They are a part of the family so, of course you need to choose the right one.

  4. This is an eye-opening post. I really don’t pay particular attention of what I give my pet. As long as it makes them full and satisfied, that’s it for me. Now that I’ve read your post, I will surely be more conscious of what I feed them. 🙂

  6. My cats are like little furry kids. We researched food because we have a cat with grain allergies and needed a simple food for her. Your cats are little cuties!

  7. I am seriously so excited to try out Only Natural Pet products! I am definitely big on making sure our food doesn’t contain any GMO’s. If it’s not good for us humans, why do they think it is ok for our pets? Uhm…no!

  8. Same things can apply to dog food (we’re dog people). Does it count if we feed a healthy-fed cat to our dog?   😉

  9. When we had cats, i always went for the cheapest – no, no, no! You have to be choosy and pick for health, it’s not worth saving a buck or two!

  10. When I was younger I used to buy what pet food was on sale or the cheapest. Now that I know that all pet food isn’t the same, I look at the ingredients when buying their food.

  13. We don’t have cats we feed as they are barn cats around my husbands shop. However I am sure that like our dog food I would grab a bag from the chef and not realize they are not all created equal.

  14. I never really thought about whether or not my cat’s pet food was healthy – same for our dog’s food! I have always bought the indoor cat, older cat, etc food, but haven’t really looked at the ingredients. Thank you for opening my eyes!
