Are your cats part of the family? Do you see them as little furry children? Do you talk to them and cuddle with them when you’ve had a tough day? I know that this is the way we feel about our cats. Since I have been trying to make healthier choices for myself and my family, it really only makes sense that I take steps to make healthier choices for our cats. Of course, choosing a healthy cat food is just as confusing as choosing healthy people food.
Choosing a Healthy Cat Food
So how do you figure out which cat food is healthy and which is not? I guarantee you that the unhealthy foods aren’t going to tell you that on the label. They all want you to think that their brand is the best choice. How can you tell the difference? Here are a few things I consider when choosing a healthy cat food:
- Where is it made? My preference is for cat food made in the USA. Picking made in the USA cat food from companies that use strong quality control also helps reduce the chances of feeding your cat food that may have been contaminated with an ingredient that may cause them to be sick.
- Consider your cats age. Kittens and seniors don’t have the same nutritional needs. Look for a cat food that is targeted toward your cat’s specific age.
- Choose what’s important to you. Are you very concerned about GMO’s? Do you insist on an organic cat food? Are you looking for a gluten free cat food for allergy reasons? Read the labels carefully and make an informed decision.
- What about protein source? If your cat has allergies, you may want to consider the source of the protein in their cat food. Speak to your vet about possible allergies and, if they recommend it, look for an anti-allergy protein source.
- Wet or dry? Much of this is dependent on your cat’s preferences. Wet food that is broken down into single serving cans may be a good choice for pets who are watching their weight. Dry food may work better for cats that eat a bit of food and then come back later for more.
I recently had the opportunity to be part of an interview with the Only Natural Pet team. Only Natural Pet products are available from Pet360. They believe in using human quality ingredients and not cast offs of lesser quality in their pet foods and treats. Their products are grain free, contain no high fructose corn syrup and are allergy friendly. They make all the good choices I want for my family available for our cats. Pet360 believes in helping us making a better life for our pets.

We dont have cats, but I will be passing this information on to friends and family that do. It is important that we make good food choices for our pets like we do ourselves.
It definitely is, Catherine! thanks!
Your cats are beautiful. I have two cats myself, and they are like kids to me. It’s very important to buy a high quality, healthy cat food for them. I think it’s definitely worth the extra money to make sure they are getting all of the nutrients they need, and not eating food that could cause harm to them.
Thank you so much, Mindy. I agree. They are just like our kids.
I’m not a cat owner but, WOW, this is a great post. I didn’t know you’d have to really look into what we feed them. They are a part of the family so, of course you need to choose the right one.
That is exactly it, Nancy, just like I do with our own food.
This is an eye-opening post. I really don’t pay particular attention of what I give my pet. As long as it makes them full and satisfied, that’s it for me. Now that I’ve read your post, I will surely be more conscious of what I feed them. 🙂
I’m so glad that my post helped you, Pauline!
Yes, getting the right food is important. We spend a fortune on our pets’ food! Your cats are so cute!
Thanks, Kristin! they are definitely worth the expense!
Thanks for these wonderful tips! We adore our three kitties and want the very best for them 😉
You are very welcome, Dawn!
It’s so important for us, as pet owners, to do what is best for our pet. Ensuring they have a healthy food is key.
That is exactly it, Toni. They cannot buy their own food so they rely on us.
We have a dog, but I imagine many of the same tips would apply for shopping for healthy dog food too….?
Most definitely they do, Lisa!
I know my daughter feeds her cat dry food, but mostly because of the expense. Wet food is a treat.
Ours prefer dry as well. I really think it depends on the cats’ preferences.
I didn’t know you were a cat lover, my cat passes away about 6 years ago – this are great tps!
Oh how sad! I adore cats. They have always been a huge part of my life.
My cats are like little furry kids. We researched food because we have a cat with grain allergies and needed a simple food for her. Your cats are little cuties!
Thanks, Pam! Grains can definitely be an issue for some cats!
I wish I could have a cat! My husband is allergic..VERY allergic! But I want one so bad!
I’m allergic too, Krista, but they are just so cute!
Great advice! It really depends on your cat as rightly mentioned. I know my friend’s tabby is a fussy kitty!
Our boy cat is definitely a fussy cat! He’s a challenge!
I am seriously so excited to try out Only Natural Pet products! I am definitely big on making sure our food doesn’t contain any GMO’s. If it’s not good for us humans, why do they think it is ok for our pets? Uhm…no!
That is exactly it, Amber! GMOs are just not good for anyone!
I don’t have a cat, but I think the same applies to dog food. They need to eat healthy as much as we do!
So very true! It definitely applies to dog food too!
Same things can apply to dog food (we’re dog people). Does it count if we feed a healthy-fed cat to our dog? 😉
LOL Scott, I don’t think so 🙂
When we had cats, i always went for the cheapest – no, no, no! You have to be choosy and pick for health, it’s not worth saving a buck or two!
That is so true, Tammi! Not a place to cut corners.
When I was younger I used to buy what pet food was on sale or the cheapest. Now that I know that all pet food isn’t the same, I look at the ingredients when buying their food.
I used to do the same thing, Stefani, until I learned what a huge difference there is!
I try to shoes healthy pet food for all my pets. I hoe it can eliminate illness and keep them healthy for many years to come.
That’s definitely one of the reasons we do it as well, Amy!
We dont have cats but I have always done a ton of research for my dog’s food. They really do much better on a simple, natural food.
I agree, Diane. It really is the best choice for our pets!
We don’t have cats we feed as they are barn cats around my husbands shop. However I am sure that like our dog food I would grab a bag from the chef and not realize they are not all created equal.
That is definitely true for dog food as well, Brandy.
I never really thought about whether or not my cat’s pet food was healthy – same for our dog’s food! I have always bought the indoor cat, older cat, etc food, but haven’t really looked at the ingredients. Thank you for opening my eyes!
Glad to help, Jenn! It was an eye opener for me!
