When my kids were little, it was like pulling teeth to get them to sit at the table and actually write out thank you cards after Christmas for a handful of presents.

Free Printable Thank You Cards for Kids and How to Make it Fun

I realize now that there were things I could have done to make the entire process of writing thank you cards more fun for everyone. Here are a few things I’ve learned over the years including some fun, free printable thank you cards for kids.

These Fill-In Thank You Cards are just perfect for younger kids! I love how colorful they are.

What you need to start working on your thank you cards for kids

Thank you cards – I have several free options below that you can print out. Or, if you prefer, you can order fill-in-the-blank cards if you prefer. These unicorn thank you cards are really cute.

Gel pens – I prefer writing cards with gel pens because they are bright and colorful but don’t smudge or bleed as markers do.

Get organized first

Make sure that you have cards, envelopes, return address labels, pencils or pens, stickers, and whatever else your child will need before you begin.  Waiting for mom to find something is not fun.

Don’t try to do it all at once

Don’t expect your child to write a huge stack of thank you cards all in one sitting.  Have them write a few at a time.

Phone calls are good too

Allow them to call and thank relatives they are close to.  A phone call to Grandma may be the perfect incentive to write the other four thank you cards.

Be flexible

Let them write the thank you cards the way they want with crayons, colored pencils, markers, etc.  It’s the thought that counts. Let them make a thank you picture if they are not yet secure with their writing and spelling skills.

Fun free cards

Use free printable thank you cards for kids instead of trying to get them to use thank you cards made for adults. Here are a few places I found free printable cards.

Encourage your child to be creative

Maybe they would rather make a collage, a salt dough thank you ornament, or record a song to say thank you.  As long as the person is thanked for their gift, does it matter how?

How do you make writing thank you cards fun for your child? Or are you only concerned that they get done? Have you ever used free printable thank you cards for kids instead of the store purchased variety?

  1. This is the first year that Liam has actually written thank you cards himself... and Erik is still too little, so I try to take a picture of them wearing or using their gift and have them draw a picture to go with it as a thank you!

  2. Great post! Especially after the holidays, a lot of us become busy with the start of a new school year, going back to work, getting organized and other obstacles and sometimes we forget about writing Thank-You cards! Thanks for the resources (:
