I don’t like really heavy desserts in the summer so this is perfect. I love fresh fruit. But, sometimes you want a dessert that’s a bit of a step up from your traditional cobblers and crisps.

So, what exactly is a dessert fruit pizza? Generally, a fruit pizza is one where the crust and the toppings are sweet. It may look like your favorite Italian pizza but it definitely doesn’t taste that way.

The crust might be made from cookie dough or from brownie batter. The sauce could be cream cheese, mascarpone, or frosting. And, the toppings are fresh fruit. Some have a drizzle of chocolate on top. Others have a sprinkling of confectioner’s sugar. It’s all up to you.

Years ago, I had a Pampered Chef fruit pizza at a party I went to, and I fell in love with the way it tasted. The one I had (get the recipe here) was made with a sugar cookie crust and had fresh strawberries and blueberries.

This chocolate brownie pizza with fruit is a little bit different since it uses brownie as the crust instead of sugar cookie dough. You could definitely use sugar cookie dough instead. Just grab a tube of the pre-made cookie dough at the store. If you’re gluten intolerant, start with a gluten-free package of brownies like we do.

Fruit pizza without cream cheese

So, you’ll notice that the “sauce” used in this recipe is cream cheese based. Basically, it’s cream cheese and confectioner’s sugar with a bit of vanilla. Now, if you’re going eww cream cheese like my husband, you can use mascarpone or you can use white frosting.

Personally, I think the white frosting is too sweet but my husband loves it. I prefer cream cheese or mascarpone. Your choice, it’s delicious either way.

Healthy fruit pizza

Desserts don’t tend to be healthy but there is a way to make this a more healthy fruit pizza. Mascarpone tends to be higher in fat than cream cheese. And, Neufchatel is slightly lower in fat than cream cheese.

White frosting will be higher in sugar content than a cream cheese frosting provided you cut the sugar back a little bit. Your best option would be to use Neufchatel with less sugar than the recipe calls for. And, you can skip the chocolate drizzle on top as well. It’s purely decorative. And, of course, eat a smaller piece.

Best pan to make the crust

So, I have seen some dessert fruit pizzas made on a pizza pan. And, I have seen some that are made on an 8″ or 9″ cake pan bottom.

This recipe will use a 9″ cake pan. And, it makes two pizzas. So, you can tailor it to the preferences of whoever is going to enjoy it.

Best fruits to use

You can really use whatever types of fruit you like. Most commonly, you’ll see strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, kiwi, and peaches. But, you can experiment with whatever your family’s favorites are as long as they are fresh.

What should you cut a fruit pizza with?

You can use a sharp knife to cut your fruit pizza just make sure that you cut it on a cutting board so it doesn’t damage your baking pan. Or, you can use a pizza cutter. It works just as well and is a bit easier to maneuver.

chocolate glaze

Fruit pizza glaze

Some people prefer to add a fruit pizza glaze to the final pizza instead of the drizzle of chocolate. You can do that by making a very thin mixture of confectioner’s sugar and water. Just be sure to get all of the lumps out with a whisk before you drizzle it on top.  For the chocolate drizzle, you will want to melt chocolate chips. Then drizzle it over the dessert fruit pizza.

How can I store my leftovers?

This is one of those recipes that is really best eaten immediately. If you don’t eat it all, you will want to put it into the refrigerator right away. If it’s warm, the frosting will thin out and melt. And, the fresh fruit won’t stay as fresh. But, the brownie crust will only stay good for so long. After a few days, your dessert fruit pizza crust will get hard.

  1. I will have to try this. It's a great spin on the traditional large cookies. The fresh strawberries make it a little bit healthier.
