10 Tips for Healthy Eyes as You Age
Aging brings along with it a lot of changes in everything from hormone level to bone and eye health. While some of the changes are unavoidable, there are a few things that we can do by improving our lifestyle choices.
1. Get an Eye Exam
It’s important to have regular eye exams to monitor changes in your eye health. Make sure that you have your eyes dilated as part of your exam. When I go, I request the digital retina exam without dilation. It gives the doctor the same information without dilating my eyes which I find annoying.
2. Know Your History
Is there eye disease in your family? Both my mother and grandmother had cataracts. Had I known that, I would have been more prepared when I was told that I had them. But, I never asked. Make sure you check.
3. Eat Healthy
Eating healthy is important for so many different reasons, but it can impact your eye health. Eating a diet that includes dark leafy vegetables like kale, spinach, and collard greens really can help your eyes. There are also eye health benefits from Omega 3’s so include fish like salmon and tuna.
4. Watch Your Weight
Did you know that being overweight means you are more likely to develop diabetes which can lead to vision loss, eye disease, and glaucoma? As we age, our metabolism slows down, so it’s important to remember to watch your weight.
5. Quit Smoking
If you still smoke, now is the time to stop. Smoking can lead to increased rates of macular degeneration not to mention a number of other health problems.
6. Remember Your Sunglasses
I almost always remember my sunglasses when I drive on sunny days. However, I often forget them if I am out at the beach or gardening. It’s important to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays whenever you are out in the sun.
7. Rest Your Eyes
If you spend a lot of time reading or connected to technology, remember to rest your eyes. Doctor’s recommend that you work 20 minutes on and then take a break to give your eyes a rest by looking further away for about 20 seconds.
8. Use Safety Glasses
Safety glasses aren’t only for those that are welding or working on machinery. It’s important that you protect your eyes when you garden, do home repairs or do crafts that have the potential of damaging your eyes.
9. Toss Eye Makeup
Did you know that your eye makeup has an expiration date? Have you been using the same mascara, eye liner, and eye shadow for years? If so, it’s time to get rid of it. Bacteria can be transferred from eye makeup to your eyes very easily.
10. Take an Eye Supplement
Even with a healthy diet, it’s difficult to get the right amount of nutrients needed for optimal vision and healthy eyes as you age. Vizual Edge can help. The “Z” in Vizual Edge is Zeaxanthin (zee-uh-zan-thin), the primary pigment in the macula in the back of the eye, which improves and protects your central vision. Thicker or more “dense” macular pigment is like having “internal sunglasses” that protects and enhances your vision.
Vizual Edge is formulated to:
- Give eyes more of the essential nutrients they need to improve vision
- Protect eyes naturally by creating lasting protection from the inside out
- Reduce glare and light sensitivity
- Protect eyes from harmful blue light from computers, tablets, etc.
- Make driving at night easier
Taking a supplement like Vizual Edge is an important way to protect your eyes as you age. Do you have any other tips for healthy eyes as you age?
