Now that my remodeling is almost done, it’s time to add a hardwood kitchen table set. If you’ve been following my Instagram account lately, you’ve probably noticed that we’re remodeling the kitchen. We took out the floor, cupboards, counters, and replaced two walls. It’s been a huge process that will take about a month before it’s complete, but it’s worth it! Thank you, Oak Furniture Land, for providing a gorgeous kitchen table set for this post.

Hardwood Kitchen Table Set
This is the first, last and only time we’ll be redoing the kitchen. The choices I’m making now need to last me a lifetime which is why it was so important to me that I find the best hardwood kitchen table set I could. I knew that 100% hardwood lasts so much longer than any type of manufactured wood substitute.
Choose the shape
Since our home was built in 1865, we have a relatively small kitchen. People just didn’t need a lot of space to cook back before the days of dishwashers and 4000 square foot homes. Because space was at a premium, we opted for a rectangular shaped table. If you have a larger kitchen, then certainly square or even circular tables may work for you. I like the straight lines of rectangular and square tables because they tend to give the room a more visually clean look. Rectangular tables also make inviting guests easier since they can generally seat more people. If space is at a premium, choose a table set with an extension.
Select a Style
Our home is a New England Farmhouse style and I tend toward a style that is somewhere between minimalism and Shaker styles. I love natural wood, but I am not attracted to a lot of decorations and accessories that some farmhouse kitchens have. I knew that I wanted the table to have an attractive finish that showed off the beautiful wood grain. If you prefer a more modern approach, you may want to choose a darker wood with less grain.
Wood Type
Always choose a hardwood kitchen table set. They will withstand wear much better than soft woods. There are a wide variety of different woods you can choose for your new table. Consider the type of wood that your cabinets are made of and your flooring if you have hardwood floors. I chose mango wood because mango is a fast growing tree that is considered more sustainable than many other types of hardwood.
Seating Options
You can opt for a traditional chair or a bench when deciding what seating options you want. Consider everyone’s age when making your selection. A booster seat for a child will more easily be attached to a chair. Elderly people or people who are handicapped may need the back support that a chair will provide rather than the open back of a bench. You may also want to choose a chair with a cushion on top – either fabric covered or leather covered. Since we have cats, we opted for solid wood because we knew it would last longer and be easier to keep clean.

We need a new hardwood table. The one we have is beat up and is done for. Thanks for sharing these tips!
Glad to share, Jess!
LOVE the new kitchen and hardwood is definitely the best way to go. You get what you pay for in terms of quality and hardwood will last a lifetime!
Thanks so much, Diane! I agree. Hardwood is definitely the best choice.
Your table and chairs are so pretty! We have our table that’s made from oak. We try to take good care of it and maintain it as it’s been handed down to us and is still lovely.
I love furniture that’s handed down! What a great way to make memories!
I love your choice of table. I think midcentury modern is what I would choose.
That sounds gorgeous, April!
I LOVE this! I’ve never thought of choosing wood based on how quickly it grows. That is great, though. We’re thinking of redoing our floors, and we’re looking at bamboo because it’s 100% sustainable.
I love bamboo too, Jennifer! We’re considering when we re-do our second floor.
Now that is a gorgeous table and chair set! Seriously so stunning! I love the hardwood look. It is just so elegant in a rustic way. More country kitchen feel which makes me completely at home!
Thanks, Amber! I really like the homey feeling too!
