Understanding Menopause Symptoms

What’s the first thing you think of when you hear the words menopause symptoms? For most people, the answer would be hot flashes. We’ve all heard the stories about the woman who is freezing one moment and throwing off her clothes the next as a hot flash hits. While that may be the most common symptom, it’s definitely not the only one. I have received free product and promotional consideration from the makers of URISTAT® and any comments I make about the product reflect my own views.

Understanding Menopause Symptoms

Women can go through menopause any time after age 40. In the United States, the average age is supposed to be 51. I’m 48 and haven’t yet started menopause yet but I’m trying to understand menopause symptoms so I’m ready when I do.  I know that menopause can be a really stressful time for women and it can often feel like you’re alone with no one that understands what you’re going through.

As a woman ages, there is a decrease in the amount of estrogen her ovaries produce. Somewhere around age 40, the decrease starts to happen faster. That period of time is called perimenopause. During perimenopause, a woman’s cycle will change and may become heavier or irregular for a few years before it stops completely (menopause). I’m in perimenopause right now and there is no real way to tell how long it will be before I enter menopause itself. Some women can be as old as 60 before they reach menopause.

Entering menopause can bring with it many emotional changes that come with our bodies changing and realizing that we aren’t able to have any more children. It’s that final action that closes the door on that time in our life and for some women, it can be a very emotional time. While most women experience hot flashes and night sweats, there are other symptoms as well. These symptoms include mood swings or changes, vaginal dryness and lack of interest in sex and urinary symptoms like urinary tract infections. These urinary symptoms are caused by the lack of estrogen and drop in “good bacteria” levels.

While UTIs, at any age, are inconvenient, uncomfortable and annoying, they are nothing to worry about, as long as you get treatment from your physician. While waiting for treatment and the infection to clear, you can get fast, temporary relief from the pain and discomfort with URISTAT ® Pain Relief Tablets. From the makers of MONISTAT®, over the counter URISTAT ® Pain Relief Tablets contain phenazopyridine HCl,the #1 doctor recommended ingredient used to treat UTI pain or discomfort.

  1. I have yet to hit menopause but it is something us women have to go through, awesome to start early in understanding it all, to prepare for it. I have had a few urinary tract infections though, and those can be quite irritating.

  2. Thanks for sharing this information on a topic a lot do not talk about. I haven't hit menopause yet but this is good to know. I have had a lot of UTI's in the last couple years due to kidney problems and they are no fun.

  4. Goodness, I didn't know that URISTAT products were offered over-the-counter now. This is good to know. I had early menopause due to surgeries I had in my late 20s, so, unfortunately, I've dealt with the effects of menopause for many years. Thanks for sharing this very helpful information.

  5. NO UTI for me at all since I am in menopause and have been for about 5 years. I do not have very bad hot flashes right now, but since I have went on a very healthy diet, and have lost weight, I feel so much better during menopause. My sister has symptoms worse than I do and hot flashes can last 7 to 10 years! Eating healthy, exercising, and taking time for my self has helped me during this transition.

  6. I still clearly remember when my Mom went through menopause. That is something I really dread. I do not look forward to reaching that stage. But at least there are a lot more options to help a woman through it now, than there were then.

  7. I had no idea this was an OTC now. UTIS are awful no matter what stage of life, but getting older isn't much fun it seems like.

  8. I think knowing what to expect is the best way to deal with menopause. My mom said menopause was easy for her, so I am hoping for the same!

  9. I entered forced menopause many years ago and while it was not my choice I am always glad that I didn't have a single "typical" symptom. UTIs can be uncomfortable enough when young, wouldn't want to have them now that I'm older.
