I’m sharing these tips for decluttering and organizing your playroom because it’s easy to get overwhelmed by toy clutter. The holidays will be here before you know it and with it will come a ton of new toys. Before that point, I make sure to go through the kid’s play room and declutter and organize everything that’s in there. There’s only so much room in this house for toys and games. Here are a few tips that work for me.

Eliminate missing pieces

Go through and toss anything that is missing pieces. This includes board games that are no longer usable, puzzles and anything else with small parts.

Repair or replace boxes

If puzzle boxes are torn or damaged, cut the front of the puzzle box out (where the picture is) and put that and the puzzles pieces into a plastic baggie with a zipper. You can still see what it is supposed to look like but everything stays self-contained.

Like with like

Get a bunch of those clear tubs with lids and put things together. All the little cars go in one. All the army men or doll clothes go into another. Make sure that they are clear so that you can see what’s in them without opening them up.

Hang things up

Put hooks up on the wall to hang up dress clothes and outfits. They don’t get all wrinkled up and it’s one less thing that takes up space on the wall.

Organize books

Use a cereal box cut in half to keep thin books together and keep them from falling down. Set the cereal box on the bookcase for easy access. Check out these tips for organizing books.

Eliminate things

Be mindful of what your children really play with. If they have 15 puzzles and they never put any of them together, do they really need any more of them? How many stuffed animals does one child need? Consider donating what they don’t play with to a local charity like a battered women’s shelter. That will make organizing easier.

Racks and bookcases

Invest in a wire rack for video games. It keeps them all in one place and off the floor so that they don’t get stepped on and ruined. Use a bookcase for storing the clear tubs of toys. They are all contained in one place and it’s easy to see at a glance where everything is.

Color coding

If you have more than one child, color code the clear tubs. Tubs with green lids can be for one child and tubs with red lids can be for another. So, that way you can tell which child has left their toys scattered all over the floor.

Art supplies

Use extra large coffee cans to store crayons, markers and colored pencils.  They’re contained in one spot and by using the lid, you can keep everything neat and organized.

Before the holidays get here, take a few minutes to go through the playroom and organize it. Make sure you involve the kids in the process.   Then, they’ll feel better about keeping the room neat and tidy if they have seen what it takes to get it that way.

So, have you started decluttering and organizing your playroom?

  1. I also use the empty cereal boxes for thin magazines and more organization. Beats paying for the cardboard ones at the store.
