My All Time 5 Favorite Survival Reality TV Shows

Last Updated on June 24, 2019 by Ellen Christian

Have you seen these survival shows on Netflix? One of my favorite ways to relax after a long day is by watching a few survival reality TV shows like Survivor. While I don’t enjoy most reality TV, I do love the survival shows where people are left in the wilderness to survive. Years ago, one of the things that we wanted to do was to live off the grid. Unfortunately, due to a few health challenges, that isn’t something we were ever able to do. But, at least we can watch it on TV and dream.

Survival Shows on Netflix

There are so many different survival reality TV shows available on Netflix that it was difficult to choose just five that were favorites. They all have a different draw. Some feature families, other survival experts, other couples. Sometimes they’re trying to survive in the desert and other times they are in Alaska or northern Canada. Either way, I enjoy learning and even finding a few things that I know that they don’t.

Remote Survival

Aided by survivalists Alex Coker and Cliff Hodges, two competitors test their wilderness skills and survival instincts in remote, perilous terrains. There is one season available for this show on Netflix. You’ll see episodes that take place in the desert, the rainforests of the Pacific Northwest and the canyons of Utah. Watch Remote Survival.

Filthy Riches

Across America, independent entrepreneurs who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty make a living by harvesting eels, worms, wild mushrooms and more. While not entirely a survival show, I love that Filthy Riches demonstrates that it is possible to make a living off the land if you’re creative and hard working. Watch Filthy Riches.

Highway Thru Hell

On the hazardous highways of Canada’s interior, heavy vehicle towing companies experience hardship and triumph rescuing wrecked and stranded trucks. In rural Vermont, one of the biggest weather hazards we have is snow and ice storms. I love seeing the creative ways that the make it through bad weather driving conditions to save people that are stranded. Watch Highway Thru Hell.

Bindi’s Bootcamp

Bindi Irwin, daughter of famed “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin, hosts this hair-raising game show that brings teams face to face with wild animals. Children aged 5 to 7 will enjoy this show.  So if you have kids that are attracted to your survival reality TV shows, get them started with this one. Watch Bindi’s Bootcamp.

Hacking the System

Host Brian Brushwood demonstrates how to duplicate a key, talk your way out of a speeding ticket and other helpful life hacks. I enjoy this one because it’s different. You never know the type of world you’ll need to survive in or the situations you’ll need to prepare for. What if it isn’t all about eating worms in the forest? What if it’s about surviving in the city? Watch Hacking the System.

You can watch all of these shows and more on Netflix.

  1. Filthy Rich sounds good. My daughter is all about the outside and being hands-on in the dirt. I bet she'd love it too!

  2. Wow, these sound like great shows! I'm not sure I'd be comfortable living off the grid - but it's fun watching other people give it a go!
