Summer Things to do in Vermont
When the weather is nice during the summer, I love spending outside time visiting local attractions. I spend most of the time in the winter inside so getting to be outside again is very welcome! I’m sharing a few of my favorite summer things to do in Vermont but there are many more than I have mentioned below.
Wilson Castle
Wilson Castle was built in the middle of the 19th century in the heart of the Green Mountains. The estate is located in Proctor, Vermont on the West Proctor Road and is a short drive from Rutland, Vermont. The Castle has been the home of five generations of the Wilson family.

The design is a blend of European styles and the facade of the Castle is set with English brick and marble with nineteen open proscenium arches, a turret, parapet and balcony. Not only can you wander through the castle, you can also take a walk through the grounds and the gardens.
Historic Cemeteries
Historic Cemeteries are located all over Vermont. You often find them located at the older churches but many state and town owned cemeteries have older sections as well. Stop in the Town Clerk’s Office in any small Vermont town and ask them for directions to the local historic cemeteries.
Then spend a fun afternoon looking at the names and the engraving on each stone. Some of the stonework is gorgeous!
Hildene
The Floating Boardwalk at Hildene is one of my favorite summer spots. Hildene is the family home of Robert Lincoln. Robert Lincoln was the only child of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln to survive to adulthood.
As an adult, he returned to Vermont and purchased 500 acres of land to build what would become the Lincoln family home for 70 years. 412 acres of the original estate are still intact.
Shelburne Museum
The Shelburne Museum is a museum of art and Americana containing over 150,000 works displayed in 39 buildings, 25 of which are historic and were re-located to the museum grounds. The museum contains impressionist paintings, folk art, quilts and textiles, decorative arts, furniture, American paintings, and a wonderful selection of 17th-to 20th-century artifacts.
The founder, Electra Havemeyer Webb (1888-1960), was a pioneering collector of American folk art and founded Shelburne Museum in 1947.
Take advantage of the warm weather to get outside and visit Vermont. Stop by the beach at Lake Bomoseen. Wander through the Wildflower Farm in Charlotte. Or just pack a picnic lunch and stop at one of the State Parks for the afternoon. Montshire Museum of Science is a great place to visit with kids. The Vermont Teddy Bear Company is fun for the entire family.
