I’m not a big fan of housework but I like living in a clean home. Sadly, we don’t have a fully automated self-cleaning kitchen. But, as soon as they make one of those, it’s on my list.

Stainless Steel Sink Shine

My goal with housework is to make it look as clean as possible without spending all day cleaning. I like to focus on the most noticeable messes first. Since our kitchen is the room right off the front entrance, I like to keep our kitchen looking as good as possible – just in case. The first step, declutter the kitchen.

After we remodeled our kitchen, one of the things I insisted on having was a farmhouse sink. I have always wanted a stainless steel farmhouse sink so that was one of the first things I chose for our kitchen remodel. I love it the style it gives the kitchen, and I love that it’s big enough to handle any size pan including my canner or my roasting pan. The one thing that I don’t love about it is that it is much more noticeable when it’s dull or covered with smudges than a traditional sink. After all, the whole front is exposed. Thankfully, I’ve learned it’s possible to make your stainless steel sink shine again.

What can I use to clean my stainless steel sink?

Before you can make it shine, you need to clean it. With a farmhouse sink, you often have a stainless steel sink protector over the bottom to protect it from scratches. Unfortunately, this is just one extra thing that needs to be cleaned. I find that using a stainless steel cleaner rather than a general kitchen cleaner leaves my stainless steel looking shinier.

The most important thing you can do when caring for your stainless steel sink is to protect it. Never use abrasive scrubs or cleaners not intended for stainless steel. And, make sure that you have a stainless steel protector grate on the bottom to protect the sink from pots, pans or other potential hazards.

How to polish a stainless steel sink

Here’s the process I used to polish a stainless steel sink from start to finish. Wash the dishes and remove the dish pain and any other clutter around the kitchen sink area. You want a clutter-free area to work with. If you have a grate, work on cleaning that first. Spray Rock Doctor’s Stainless Steel Cleaner on the grate and use a toothbrush to clean all of the nooks and crannies. Then, remove the grate and set it aside. Follow the same procedure on the sink remembering to clean the sink strainer.

That’s the whole process. Depending on how dirty your sink is, it should take you less than 15 minutes to make it shine. Of course, Rock Doctor has a variety of other cleaners that will make your kitchen company ready in no time. You can use their Granite Cleaner and Granite Polish on your granite counters. And, you can use their Tile and Grout Cleaner in the kitchen and the bathroom on your tile and grout. They have everything you need to keep your kitchen and bathroom looking spotless. Check out my video of the process.

  1. I'm constantly trying to keep my sink and grout clean but don't have any granite to care for in my apartment. I wash all my dishes by hand so the sink gets plenty dirty. Nothing is automated in my small kitchen, not even the freezer, so anything that makes cleaning easier is very welcome!
