Sleepytime Banana Oatmeal Muffins - Gluten Free #IWasSoTired

Gluten Free Banana Oatmeal Muffins

Have you heard of tryptophans? You know, they’re that thing that’s in turkey that makes everyone sleepy after Thanksgiving dinner?  Your body turns tryptophans into melatonin which in turn can make you sleepy. Did you know that there are other foods besides turkey that contain tryptophans?

Bananas, oatmeal, and milk all contain tryptophans just like turkey. These Banana Oatmeal Muffins are the perfect choice for a late-night snack with a cup of chamomile tea on those nights you cannot fall asleep. Of course, they are also gluten-free so everyone in the house can enjoy them. These healthy gluten-free banana muffins are one of my favorite breakfasts as well as a perfect snack.

I find that falling asleep at night is tough some nights. It really helps me to have a routine that helps me unwind. An hour or so before bedtime, I stop doing anything stimulating – like working, watching scary movies, or playing video games. I find a good book or relaxing television program and spend my last hour unwinding.

I generally have a cup of herbal tea like chamomile which helps me unwind. These Sleepytime Banana Oatmeal Muffins are the perfect snack. They’re low in sugar, have extra protein from the Greek yogurt, and are high in those tryptophans that can help you fall asleep.

Nobody likes the feeling the day after they don’t get a good night’s sleep. I feel scattered and cranky and not quite myself. I make silly mistakes and forget what I’m doing mid-thought. It’s not a fun thing to go through.

Having a hard time falling asleep, I’ve shared a few tips for getting a good night’s sleep.

What else can I add to these muffins?

If you want banana nut oatmeal muffins, you can add chopped nuts. I would recommend either walnuts or pecans. And, you could always add in a handful of chocolate chips. But, since chocolate has caffeine, I would probably not eat them before bedtime.

Of course, these flourless banana oatmeal muffins are already gluten-free. There’s no need to make any modifications there.

How can I make a vegan banana muffin?

If you want to make these banana oatmeal muffins gluten-free and vegan, you will need to use an egg replacer instead of the eggs. And, you can use vegan yogurt instead of traditional Greek yogurt.

Can I freeze these gluten-free banana oatmeal muffins?

Yes, if you want to make a large batch of these gluten-free muffins you certainly can. I usually freeze my muffins without using the muffin liners. If you want to freeze them, I would recommend that you bake them in the silicone muffin liners. Then, just remove them from the liner before you freeze them. I usually put two muffins in a freezer bag so I can take out just what I need.

  1. Spread some butter and honey on them and it would knock me right out. Going to see if I can talk the kiddos into helping me make some.

  4. I had no idea that oatmeal and bananas had triptofan (sp?) in it. WOW......I wonder how that affects my daughter when I feed her oatmeal before school. I need to pay attention. The muffins look delicious!!
