How to Organize Laundry Room Chaos

I can get all of the laundry washed, dried, folded and put away and a few hours later, there is a full basket of dirty clothes again. Most of the laundry ends up being my responsibility.

Yes, I know that I have two teenagers and a husband who “should” be able to help with laundry.  Honestly, I’ve tried a few times, but it just doesn’t work out.

The clothes aren’t sorted correctly.  The amount of detergent is never right.  The clothes come out damp from the dryer.  They get wadded up into a wrinkled mess instead of folded neatly.

Organizing your laundry room

I have decided that I need to work on getting an organized laundry room to help reduce a bit of the chaos. The first step in being able to organize laundry is to make it easier for people to help.

Right now, everyone has a laundry basket in their room for dirty clothes.  When it’s full, they bring it downstairs to the bathroom where the laundry is for me to wash.

That doesn’t work well for me because there is nowhere to sort the laundry. I like to sort laundry into darks, whites, and towels. Here are a few steps I’m taking to get more organized.

Do laundry daily

Do it daily. And, do a little bit every day. Don’t try to tackle a mound of laundry all in one day.

Dirty clothes that are left to build up can leave an odor in your laundry room, and there is always a potential increase in bacteria.

Ask for help

Make everyone responsible for making sure their clothes get brought to the laundry room when they are dirty. You can’t do it all.

Do I need to sort laundry?

Sort the laundry. Laundry should be sorted into dark, lights, towels and delicates.  All too often I toss it all in the washer together.

Where to store laundry supplies

Store supplies nearby. If you have the room, make sure that all of your laundry supplies are stored near the washer/dryer. We have a tiny bathroom/laundry room, so that’s not always possible.

Earth Breeze laundry sheets take up so much less room than traditional jugs of detergent. It’s all we use right now to save on space and still have clean, fresh laundry. Check them out.

Saving space in the laundry room

All in one washer/dryer. We have very little room in the bathroom. The only way I could have a washer, AND dryer is to get an all in one unit. It goes in dirty, washes, dries, and comes out clean. It’s a huge time saver.

Take it out immediately

Remove the laundry as soon as it is dry. You will not have wrinkles that way. Promptly fold and put away.

Don’t live out of a laundry basket all week. If you do have ironing to do, deal with it immediately and hang it up. That way the laundry room will be clean, and the clothes will be ready to wear.

  1. I had a sorter that had a padded top that was hinged.  Perfect for folding and stacking clean laundry.  I would highly recommend getting one like that.  I no longer have it because I have a freezer utilizing the space where it once was in my laundry room.

  4. I do have to do at least two loads of laundry a day and I sort them with towels for hot water and colored clothing and white clothing.  I am glad everyone put their clothes in the correct baskets that I keep in the laundry room.  The  triple laundry sorter looks terrific to me and would certainly help.

  5. These are great ideas!  My kids are 4 and 2 so I am constantly struggling with my four year old about putting dirty clothes where they belong.  He's good at putting away clean clothes...and super dirty clothes...but it seems if there is a question, they belong on the floor.  :P

    • Don't give up! Or you have my boys in their 20's who will still leave clothes draped all over the house when they are home. I just got up and saw 3-4 of my husband's pants and shorts in heaps on any flat surface. Not clean, not dirty "enough". And everyone knows what state the clothes are in except me! So keep working on the 4 year old and train him right, you will save a lot of unnecessary struggles.

  6. I really want that cart! I like to sort our laundry into hanging clothes (ones that go in the closet), folded clothes (ones that go in the dresser), and towels. I do this before I wash it so that they're easier to sort and put away after I wash it. The cart would make it a lot easier b/c right now I put the piles on the floor of our basement. Ick.

  7. I don't organize at all, I just keep everyones separate and wash them by person. I think this is easier for putting them away.

  8. I just ordered a triple laundry sorter this week. I separate my clothes kinda different: clothes, towels and dish cloths. I hated having three different piles on the floor. I can't wait till it gets here!

  9. The only thing I hate about our new house is my laundry situation. It's so screwed up. I hope my husband can fix it for me, soon. Great ideas here. I don't really have any tips. I guess the one thing I try to do is to get it all done and put away in 1 day.

  10. These are all wonderful tips. I've never heard of an all in one washer/dryer. That would save my sanity, for the most part.  I started line drying my clothes and my laundry days have been much simpler than when I dried in the dryer. When I dried in the dryer, it would take me days to finish laundry. I can't do a little bit here and there everyday. I need to get it all done in one day. My boys are responsible for putting everyone's clothes away once I'm finished folding them. Sometimes they get the joy and opportunity to fold the clothes. I do agree that those pods are divine, I enjoy using them too.

    • Oh and I'll need like two or three of the laundry sorters. I usually have like 6 or 7 loads of clothes to wash because of how I sort my clothes out and the amount of clothes I have to wash, lol

    • Lately it has been so humid here that nothing will dry on the line. I do love the smell of line dried clothes but after days on the line, they get yucky!
