Make your own oil diffuser for essential oils

Make Your Own Oil Diffuser

I love oil diffusers because I love scents in my home. Unlike candles, I can leave the oil diffuser alone unattended and not worry about fire or the black soot from the candles getting on my walls.

Diffusing essential oils is one of the best ways to scent your home naturally.  You can choose a different bottle, scent, and sticks depending on the room you want to use it in.

Ideally, a bottle with a small neck is best. You could use an old glass Soy Sauce bottle if you wanted to upcycle or you could use a bud vase instead.

If you want, you can use bamboo sticks to draw the oils up in your diffuser or, if you would rather have a more natural look, you can use twigs from outside as well. Just make sure they are already broken off from the tree and dead so they are dry.

What oil is best for a homemade diffuser?

Sweet almond oil is one of the best choices because it is thin enough to travel up the reed. Or, you can use warm water if you prefer.

Materials:

  • Glass bottle with a narrow neck
  • 3 thin dried and peeled sticks or bamboo sticks
  • Essential oil or oils of your choice (Lavender and Tea Tree Oil work well for me)
  • Warm water

How to make your own oil diffuser

  • Fill the bottle with warm water.
  • Add about 20 drops of essential oil of your choice to each 8 ounces of water you use.
  • Place the sticks in the bottle and wait for the sticks to draw up the oil and release the scent into your room.

If you’re really feeling crafty, you could paint the bottle or decorate it to match your decor. I’m considering decoupaging a design on the front of the next bottle that I do. Simply replace the diffuser sticks and essential oils when you stop smelling the oils in your room.

  2. How long does the scent stay with the water? I had always heard the oils would evaporate quickly from plain water... so when I did this I followed instructions from another blog and used a carrier oil... but since I didn't have enough FCO I used canola oil and I think it's too heavy... my reeds don't really throw my scent very far :( sad day. I will perfect this eventually though, I'm determined!!!

    • Hi Laura - I was worried about the oil going rancid in the heat so I went with water. What I have been doing is flipping the reeds upside down each morning and it seems to work well. It won't fill the whole room with scent but it's great in a smaller area or on a desk.

  3. Great idea! Love the bottle you chose, too. I have been trying to find my craft wholesale supply company info so I can order more glass bottles and vases. Do you have a favorite mail order company? Or can you find them locally?

  5. I love this and I'm going to do it!  I just bought mini skewers for cake pops yesterday and I can put the pointed part in the bottle with the flat end sticking out.  How fun and easy!  Thanks Ellen!
