How to Make Cupcake Push Pops

I already have visions of sugarplums dancing in my head.  During the year, I don’t do a lot of baking but as Christmas gets closer, the baking bug hits.   We tend to do a fair amount of holiday entertaining and I love having people over for dessert.  The kids always seem to have parties and events to attend that they need to bring snacks for.

I see all these amazing frosted cupcakes on the internet with perfectly sculpted mounds of piped on frosting.  While I’ve managed a few cupcakes that impressed me, most of my cupcakes aren’t that amazing.

I wanted to make some kind of Christmas treat that would wow people that didn’t require amazing skill as a cupcake decorator.

I saw a cupcake push pops kit at the craft store the last time I went and was impressed by the fact that the frosting was squashed in between the cupcakes. How could I possibly mess up squashed frosting?

Push Up Cupcake Containers

You will need a set of push up cupcake containers to make these. I used this set which is really easy to use even if you’ve never done it before.

How to make a Push Pop

I chose PEEPS® Trees and PEEPS® Snowmen to give these cupcake push-pops a Christmas feel but you could choose any type of PEEPS® to match your holiday or party.

You can coordinate the color of the cake, frosting, and sprinkles to match your holiday as well or leave out the food dye. Your choice.

How do you fill cake push pops?

  • Bake the cake mix per package directions in the mini cupcake pan. Allow them to cool completely. Remove liners if you used them.
  • Cut the top off each mini cupcake to make the top flat.
  • Place one mini cupcake in the bottom of each push-up cake pops containers.
  • Pipe in a layer of frosting using the piping bag.
  • Add sprinkles.
  • Drop-in another mini cupcake.
  • Add more frosting.
  • Add more sprinkles.
  • Continue until the cupcake push pop is full.
  • Top with a PEEPS® Tree or Snowman using a toothpick to make it stand up straight.

We made our cupcake push pops with a gluten-free cake mix.  Since PEEPS® are gluten-free, it’s a snack my daughter can enjoy too.

You really can make push pop cupcakes in almost any design. Change the type of cake mix you use and the color of the frosting. You can use food dye if you want to. Layer in fresh fruit for a healthier version.

Or, look for PEEPS in other holiday themes.
