How to Maintain Joint Comfort During Holiday Travel

The holidays mean travel plans are in the forecast for many people. Not only are we traveling more to find all of those special gifts for everyone on our list, we are also traveling to visit friends and family, attending holiday parties and enjoying the season with those that mean the most to us. Hours on the road or in the air can leave our joints and muscles feeling occasionally stiff and uncomfortable. It’s important, now more than ever, to be sure that we are doing everything we can to maintain the comfort our bodies deserve.

Regular Stretching

If you have a long holiday trip planned this year, make sure that you build in frequent breaks to move and stretch. If you’ll be traveling by airplane or train, be sure that you get up from your seat and walk up and down the aisle while you’re traveling. If you have a long car trip planned, pull over into a rest area and walk around the parking lot. Or, if the weather is bad, walk inside the rest stop itself to avoid slippery surfaces.

Stay Hydrated

Be sure that you’re drinking enough water to keep your muscles hydrated. The adult human body is made up of approximately 60% water. You may not be aware, but dehydration can leave you and your muscles feeling more tired than normal. Don’t let this get in the way of your holiday plans, so make sure to pack a water bottle before you head out and refill it as you go.

Eat Healthy

The holiday season is a time for entertaining. With entertaining comes meticulous food prep and over consumption can be a challenge given the many appetizers and seasonal treats that come as an extension to any holiday gathering. A great way to avoid over consumption and engage in healthy eating is to cut back on processed foods and ensure you’re eating plenty of lean meats, fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Processed foods are often higher in fat and sugar than whole foods. By watching what you eat more carefully, you’ll find that it’s easier to maintain a healthy weight. Carrying excess weight can place more strain on your joints.

Get Enough Sleep

Our bodies repair themselves while we sleep, so it’s important that we get at least 7 or 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep for optimal health. When traveling, it can be tricky to achieve this goal so if falling asleep is a challenge for you, try listening to relaxing music before bed or take a warm bath and enjoy a cup of herbal tea to cue your body that it’s time to relax and sleep.

Support Your Joints

Upholding your daily routines even while traveling is important for maintaining full body health. It can be easy to forget your daily vitamins so be sure to add it to your packing list before heading out for the holiday. I always travel with Osteo Bi-Flex® Triple Strength, a supplement that helps maintain joint health and helps contribute to a healthy diet.* This product contains Joint Shield™, an herbal ingredient that helps aid occasional joint flare-ups, and glucosamine which helps to strengthen joints while helping maintain joint cartilage that is essential for comfortable movement*.

  1. My husband just spent 25 hours traveling to New Zealand. We are SO glad he doesn't have joint issues. I can't imaging having to travel that long when your joints ache!
