While my family and I aren’t vegetarians, we do eat a number of vegetarian meals throughout the week to keep our food budget under control.  Many vegetarian meals also encourage healthy eating habits.  They tend to be high in whole grains, vegetables and low in fat. I like to try to eat healthy when I can and vegetarian meals often fit in perfectly with my goals. Because we aren’t strict vegetarians, we don’t have a lot of the ingredients that many vegetarian recipes call for. When I look for a vegan cookbook, I like to be able to make the dishes without buying a bunch of ingredients that we don’t normally use.

The Jazzy Vegetarian is lively vegan cuisine that’s easy and delicious.   This vegan cookbook begins with a foreword that explains why dietary change is important to improve your health.  A whole food, plant based diet can help people eat healthier. Laura Theodore is the host of a public television show titled the Jazzy Vegetarian as well as the author of this cookbook.   She explains how she went from being a jazz singer to promoting vegan food.  She also explains the basics of the vegan diet including a handy glossary of ingredients. She encourages organic eating to prevent the toxic burden that non-organic growing methods can expose us to. The book has a section on herbs, an equivalents chart, and a chapter on planning tempting meals along with ready made menu plans.

The recipes are broken down into Bountiful Breakfasts & Smoothies, Scrumptious Muffins & Quick Breads, Appetizing Starters & Snacks, Satisfying Soups & Sandwiches, Sassy Salads, Perfect Pasta, Marvelous Main Dishes, and Decadent Desserts & Beverages. The recipes include a brief introduction, detailed ingredients list that  and easy to follow directions.  Many of the recipes include foods you should commonly have around the house.  While some do call for things like non-dairy milk or tofu, most of  them have ingredients that will be familiar to anyone – vegetarian or not. There are tried and true favorites your family may already enjoy like Quick Lasagna Rolls and some new tastes to introduce them to like Roasted Asparagus with Garlic and Tomatoes.

If you’d like to introduce your family to a few vegan meals while still serving them foods that they enjoy, the Jazzy Vegetarianvegan cookbook is a great introduction. We tried the Awesome Oatmeal and it was delicious!

  3. We try to eat vegetarian at least once a week - you're right in that it can be a money saver.. unless you are shopping for hard to get or out of season produce... then it can be as expensive as a meaty meal... Thanks for the cookbook review- I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for it.

  7. I have read about how much lbs you can lose just by cutting out soda and meat products. this would be a great book for me because i dont know how to cook very well :P
