Have you ever wondered how to care for your joints during the cold winter months? As much as I love the beauty of freshly fallen snow, the cold temperatures can be a bit of a challenge as I get older, but I don’t plan on letting the weather slow me down. Even if the winter may present unique challenges, it is especially important to care for your joints all year round. There are too many fun things that I want to do during the winter!

Joint health is dependent on mobility, so just like the other seasons in the year, it is important to keep moving during cooler weather, despite the urge to stay in and snuggle by the fire. Here are a few tips to consider when caring for your joints:

Dress in Layers

If you’re going outside, or if it’s colder in your home, it’s important to stay warm. Dressing loosely in layers will allow you to move freely and stay warm at the same time. Consider extra layers where you experience joint discomfort the most. Choose shirts with extra-long sleeves and if your wrists bother you, gloves with fur. If you want to experience added comfort for your knees, consider wearing leggings or thermal wear under your pants.

Stay Hydrated

Since many people who are concerned about joint comfort feel the cold weather in their joints, it’s important that you do everything you can to control your discomfort levels. Staying hydrated is important when you’re active and mild dehydration may make you more sensitive to occasional stiffness in the body.

Lose Weight

Excess weight can cause your bones and joints to work overtime to support the extra pounds. Did you know that losing just one pound takes four pounds of pressure off your knees? Talk to your doctor about the best way to manage your weight.

Extra Vitamin D

Research has shown that concerns on joint comfort may be more prevalent in those that have low levels of vitamin D. We can get our vitamin D from things such as food and sunlight, but when that isn’t enough, we can also take supplements containing vitamin D. I supplement my diet with Osteo-Bi Flex® EASE, it contains vitamin D3, an active and potent form of vitamin D that helps support bone health.*

Extra Protection

You may want to promote added comfort to your joints by adding extra protection when you’re outside. Wear supportive shoes with a good tread and avoid surfaces that look slippery or ice covered. If you do need to be outside in the slippery weather, look for ice cleats to wear over your boots for extra safety.

Supplements

Taking a supplement like Osteo-Bi Flex® EASE is a great way to support your overall joint health during the cold weather months and all year round.* One mini-tab a day supplies Joint Shield™, an herbal ingredient that helps with occasional joint flare-ups, and a natural source of collagen called UC-II® that’s been shown to improve joint comfort within 7 days.*† Best of all, Osteo Bi-Flex® EASE mini-tabs are 80% smaller (compared to Osteo Bi-Flex® One Per Day tablet), so they’re easier to swallow! .

I want to be able to keep enjoying walks in the snow and impromptu snowball fights with the kids this winter, so I plan on paying special attention to these tips so I can care for my joints properly in the cold weather.

What are you looking forward to this winter?

  1. Great tips! I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and the cold weather is NOT my friend! I do use OTC products in addition to my prescriptions. However, I've never tried this. Definitely going to look for this and give it a try!

  2. I'll have to remember to keep painful joints warmer, I had no idea this was important! Getting out of bed on cold mornings seems to take more effort as I get older! :(
