Buttercream Mint Candy Recipe

I don’t eat candy on a daily basis but when the holidays get closer, I love making my homemade candy recipes to share with friends and family (and enjoy myself).

Besides my peanut butter fudge, one of Marty’s favorite candy recipes is my homemade Buttercream Mint candy recipe. They are super easy to make and they taste just like those buttercream mints you buy at the store.

The only difference is that I do not put artificial food coloring in mine.

Buttercream mints are very simple to make, can be made ahead and frozen, and taste like they took much more time to make than they actually did. You can set out a bowl for your guests to enjoy or package some up to give as a gift.

How to store buttercream mint candy

The mints will keep for up to one week in the refrigerator or you can freeze them for longer storage. I love making Marty’s favorite holiday recipes each year. It’s a simple way to show him how much he means to me.

A bowl with ingredients and an electric beaters

So these cream cheese butter mints are very simple to make. You will want to use either a stand mixer or an electric beater.

You want to get the cream cheese and the sugar mixed together very well with no lumps.

These old fashion butter mints remind me of the candies that my grandparents used to share at the holidays. Who else remembers a candy dish on the coffee table in the living room?

We always had hard candies or old fashioned butter mints in a dish. I remember stealing more than my fair share when no one was looking. I wish I had gotten the recipes for her homemade candy recipes.

Can you freeze buttermints?

Yes, you definitely can. You can store them at room temperature for a few weeks provided it’s not too hot out. Or, you can keep them in the refrigerator in a tightly covered container for about a month.

If you want to freeze them, be sure that they are in a tightly covered freezer-proof container. They will stay good for up to two months. Just don’t let them get freezer burn.

raw candy batter and electric mixer beaters

Christmas is one of my favorite holidays. I love giving back to others and taking the time to show people how much they mean to me.

There are so many little ways to do that and it doesn’t need to take hours from your day. Caregiving can be a challenge but there are a lot of ways to show you care.

Female legs and hot drink with marshmallows on windowsill

I can show my family how much they mean to me by making their favorite dinner or dessert, by remembering to have their lucky shirt washed on exam day or by remembering to pick up a copy of their favorite magazine when I shop.

Some days, it’s the little things that really matter and the simple act of my husband bringing me a cup of coffee on a busy afternoon makes all the difference in the world to me.

Are these wedding buttermints?

So, if you’re looking for a wedding buttermints recipe, this is basically the same thing. The only real difference is that they are rolled into tiny balls and not pressed flat with a fork.

And, many are dyed to match whatever the colors are for the wedding party. You can use the same recipe and just shape them differently.

I hope you have a chance to try a few of my homemade candy recipes including this buttercream mint candy.

  • 10 2/3 tbsp butter, at room temperature
  • 1 pound confectioner's sugar, sifted with no lumps
  • 1 tsp mint extract (NOT flavoring)

Instructions

  2. Hello! I’d like to make these for a rehearsal dinner I am hosting in September. How far in advance can I make them?

    • Hi Pearl - I wouldn't make them more than a day or two ahead of time. They will harden as they are exposed to the air.
